Just wondering what people think about the contents on this DVD:
http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=918 For those who currently perform Seances, does the list of contents seem worth it? Just looking for some opinions, thanks. |

For 29 bones, I think you will get 29.00 worth of information out of it, for about the same cost you would get more from the 13 steps or one of Jim Magus books, but that is me.

Do a check on my name and see my reviews of books, that will help you. I trust Tony, so if he says, NOPE, then I will have to go with that.

Thanks, Sir T, for the compliment.
Mauricio....you might want to get a copy of the bound "Seance" magazine. Lots of ideas in there to mold, shape and manipulate into your own routines. I don't know if its still available or not, so you might need a used copy. Best regards, Tony Razzano

The bound "Seance" is out of print, but you can pick up a copy on ebay from time to time. I just picked up a copy myself.

I think I'll get this just for the sheer entertainment value.

It looks spooky but I don't like the looks of D Dooley because he scares me.
I think it will be good this Halloween to know the tricks in the Seance. |

Here's the DVD's contents as per the P****** M**** ad: "The Effects: Spirit Slates - Make spirit messages appear on covered chalkboards. Spirit Cloth - A bell rings, a tambourine rustles, a hand reaches up and grabs you. Haunted Key - This bizarre little key has a mind of its own. Haunted Deck - One of the scariest card tricks in the world. The deck moves by itself to find your selected card! The Devil’s Ashes - Messages materialize from ashes sprinkled on your arm. The Houdini Spirit Table - This is the table Houdini used to expose the fraudulent spirit tricks of the Boston Medium Margery. This table was in Dixie's possession for six years before he discovered the gimmick! This is the first time the gimmick has ever been exposed. In the Séance Room - Dancing Handkerchiefs, The Glorpy, The Crystal Ball, The Large Floating Table, Black Art and more! Spirit Cabinet - Your assistant is placed in a trance, tied up, and enclosed in a Spirit Cabinet. The spirits in the room make themselves known by creating any number of strange, impossible, and often hilarious disturbances inside the cabinet. The Zombie - Learn the world's most mysterious floating ball effect with Dixie's professional advice on transitioning in to your Zombie routine. This Old Haunted House: The Spirit Table - You'll learn how to build a spirit table step-by-step for under $ 100. This same table would cost over $ 300 if you bought it in a shop. Spirit Slates - Dixie talks you through the construction of your own Spirit Slates. These Spirit Slates can be constructed for under $ 10, and in a store they might cost upwards of $ 50. Comedy Séance: Watch as Dixie performs a comedy séance in his "World of the Unreal" show at the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. This routine will give you dozens of ideas and help you incorporate the spirit effects you've just learned into your act. Bonus: The Liberace Séance - Late at night in a darkened building, Dixie and a small group of others attempt to contact the hereafter. Penguin Magic has acquired exclusive footage of the unusual event."

YES!
The DVD is definetly worth it, if you've never done seance material, and are looking for a good source. It looks like it might be one of the better DVDs on the subject of putting together your own seance and building your own tricks. I've seen most of the effects on the DVD and can say they're great! For $29, it's a load of information! |

Bamba,
Thanks for the kind words! I have no problem with people who disagree with me. If some think this is a good dvd, that's fine. I will not argue the point. We, who currently perform seances, were asked our opinions and I gave mine. MentaThought, if you, or anyone else, disagrees...ok, cool. Best regards, Tony Razzano

Well, lets see.... 7 of the effects on the video are standard marketed effects. I cant imagine what more could be added considering the work already done on them. And the fact that the marketed effects are listed as "main fare," makes me wary. Sadly, the only other buzz about this magicican was his escapology dvds, and their mixed bag reviews leaned more on the "No" side. I can see this for beginners or "magicians," but those "into" this type of performance already know where to go for their info.

I've been thinking about conducting a theatrical seance for a while and so I checked out the listing on this DVD.
Frankly I'm not inspired. It refers to some very basic mentalist effects for the most part it seems to me. I have enough source material to perform most of the effects on the DVD. The only potentially redemming feature for me might be the performance and tips on presentation. These might be worth the price of the DVD and so if anyone has seen it and can comment specifically on these points I'd be grateful A |

For presentations tips, I think one might be better served by the Lizzie Borden Seance portfolio ... but as mentioned above I haven't see D. Dooley's DVD. I do, however, personally know about a dozen individuals who have presented successful theatrical seances (including Docc Hilford) and don't see anything presented in the advertising of the DVD which makes me think that this would be useful to someone thinking about presenting a DECENT theatrical seance. To me, it looks more like the way a mundane magician would present a seance ... I've seen plenty of magicians try to pull off a seance and it didn't work. They forget that 1st, this is THEATER and not another boring magic show. There is a big difference between entertainment and theater.
I know the seance I presented in Salem Massachusetts this year was VERY respectful to a real seance and definitely presented as theater. It was the hardest thing I ever did. I say, if you want to talk about presenting a GOOD theatrical seance, talk to the likes of Tony Razzano, or the rest of Trinity, Rick Maue, Samhain, Docc Hilford, Osiris (name on TheMagicCafe) Brother Shadow, or Larry White (Lizzie Borden Seance). Nothing against D. Dooley, but most of the Vegas entertainers aren't (in my opinion) very magickal, except for the likes of Jeff McBride. Just my 2c ... Over all, my feeling is if you’re a magician who wants to do a Séance on the lighter side then this is an ok DVD. Most of the effects are dealer ideas. If you want a strong (or heavy) style of presentation look into the books by Burger, Earle, Magus or Blackhart.

I really want to see Dixie's performance. Frankly It's cheap and a bit of entertainment for me.
Besides, I like Dixie. H.W
