Hey Everyone, I just recently had a new tail coat made and I have a few questions. The jacket is all black with black satin lappels and black pants. I don't want to wear a white shirt underneath as I don't want to look to "old-school" or classical. I am using this costume for a dove act in which the main color scheme is red. I was thinking about maybe wearing a blue shirt so that there is a nice constrast. What do you guys think?
Thank you in advanced! Darcy |

I think if it looks good to you, go for it. I like wearing different color shirts with my black jacket or vest sometimes. Most any color will look good with black, IMO.

Hey Darcey, how are you? I say stick with the red to keep your color sceme complete. (And this way we won't look alike when we compete next time with me wearing my blue shirt and all : ) )

A bright red would be sharp however I would stick to a nice classic white.

It really depends on the image you are trying to project. For the classic look, white, for class yet subtle look maybe a light to medium blue. You do not need red, yellow or other pastel colors addingcontrast to the background you think you need to produce doves. A great production does not need color or contrast behind it.
Just make sure if you do go with color, it flatters your skin tones. |

I think everything is okay as long as you wear a jacket. I think is you wore a nice red or white shirt it would look even nicer - you could also do some magic without the jacket but anyway, I guess you look good wearing your clothes! Go for it!

I find I get hot very quick, I wear a simple Hanes black crew neck t-shirt with black-on-black tux tails. Keeps me cooler and interesting blend of styles. Works for me.

I can't say don't wear colors because I do it too! (I really like it!) But never forget that the rules for formal dress (white tie and black tie) are very set. If the occasion is formal, by all means, stay strictly formal. (In true formal dress, entertainers also do not expect to change costumes during the show. It SAVES TIME!)
Almost any deviation from strict formal dress will make your clothing a costume rather than formal dress. (Don't wear it off stage!) That can be as simple as a colored tie or vest or as blatant as the silver tails in this photo. When in doubt, go for absolutely correct formal dress. There are times when a costume is embarrassingly inappropriate. It is bad enough to embarrass yourself. Embarrassing a talent buyer or agent can kill jobs for years. It is very rare that leaving stage in a costume is in good taste. Change first! Bellhops, waiters, and busboys wear costumes (actually uniforms) in most cases. Don’t confuse it with formal dress. It will mark you as a service worker to the educated clientele. I vote for the red shirt whenever you can. (I'm sure Lucy would vote that way too but it might be time well spent to ask her for details. She spent many years as a model in New York and Los Angeles. She taught modeling for John Robert Powers in Los Angeles. I have seen her wear colored shirts with black satin tux costume coats, but never with a regular black tux coat. - Just a husband's observation. - Lucy also does dove magic with body loads.) I guess I'm old school. I've never worn anything but a tux. I have been in the Magic business 22 years.

Hiya guys,
I'm a female magician and I have 2 types of uniform for when I perform, oh btw I am a stage magician, mainly do children's magic, ok, one out fit I wear is a dark green blazer with a rainbow scarf pinned along the neck going down off the shoulders with rainbow gloves pinned by the pockets, a mickey mouse top, stripey socks, black or beige troussers etc,and another out fit I have is a purple velvet type top/coat,that has like black netting sort of thing on the shoulders and sleeves, and I wear black trousers, and black socks. I have loads of differnet hats lol, e.g jester's hat with bells on, a union jack hat with bells on etc. Also wear a sparkly brooch reading magic, with the 'I' looking like a magic wand. I love birght colours btw! I wear bright colours wheter or not I'm in my magic uniform!

BTW need some advice, should female magicians wear white gloves? and should female magicians wear boe ties for their magic, like part of the uniform? It will be interesting to see what people will say, as I told someone and he came out and said "omg y" and I replied "Omg y not?" he said "Women don't wear boe tie's unless they are lezzies."
I am straight but I have never heard about women being gay if they wore boe ties. Plus it's gender discrimination if women can't wear them or gloves!.. amgic should be open for both sexes.

BTW I have my first tv magic gig coming up in May,it's my first tv appearance performing magic, the other time was not to do with magic. Has anyone got any tips or adive about clothes I should wear? It's basically about meeting up and showing each other's skills, close-up magic mainly too.
