I’m a relative newbie (2 yrs of everyday practice), so I always start with the proposition that if I think I’ve discovered something new, chances are it has been done before and it’s only new to me.
With that in mind, I’d like to describe an effect I’ve been working on in the hopes (and expectations) that, if it has been done before, one of you maestros of magic will lead me to its source so I can refine what I have so far. The effect: four cards are displayed and shown back and front. They are completely ungimicked and wiped together to prove their innocence. They are laid face down on the close-up mat in matrix formation. Two by two they are slowly tilted up so that the spectators can take a final look underneath, and allowed slowly and extremely fairly to fall back on the mat. Magical gesture time. The hands then snap the cards over two by two, revealing four silver dollars resting on the mat, one under each card. Everything is clean and examinable. Any thoughts on who else does/did this?

Hi
It sounds like a matrix variation, although the falling back on to the mat is different. Paula

This kinda thing HAS been done before...but for it ta be original it has to have a unique method or execution if you will.
And that could take awhile ta research. Do not be discouraged! A lot of us go thru this same thing and I've been doing this for 20 yrs. Johnny

Thomas,
I wouldn't call it a "Matrix". That's a form of coin assembly. The effect of coins appearing under cards is not new. Without seeing the effect it's hard to know if your method is... Mike Gallo, Curtis Kam and Michael Rubenstein would also be worth contacting about this sort of effect. |

Re: They are ... wiped together to prove their innocence.
Okay, guess we have a sense of humor too. Of course coins have been produced from under cards before. You might want to ask folks like Al Schneider, Jerry Andrus and Harvey Rosenthal about this topic. Those guys have published material in that area from over thirty years ago.

What does it matter if it has been done before...you still created it yourself...obviously if you are going to go around puttin it in print or teaching it...then it would be worth checking the origines...but otherwise be pleased that you have created something original.
Well Done owen |

Thomas is exploring. Great!
He also wants to know where his discovery fits into the history of the field. Another thing I respect about his post. It is much more efficient to explore the literature first, than to cobble something together... THEN seek to backtrack the material. What motivated you to combine the things you did, to get the result you got? Can you recall the sources for the actions and sleights? There are stages in learning magic. At one stage you read EVERYTHING. At another stage you want to show everyone everything you play with. This parallels our cognitive development.

It's funny, I said the same thing when I came up with the same idea... lol. Everyone's is different. You could call it your own, but not an inovation.

We don't know that yet.
You never know when an innovation will happen.

Enjoy the play, discovery and reinvention.
You are on the right track. Many things are "reinvented" from time to time. Perhaps it is like tapping into the collective unconcious of those that have come before. We stand on the shoulders, books, and manuscripts of those that.... but I digress... Be safe and creative. Harris Deutsch Laughologist

Paul Harris created a gaff that can be used to load coins under cards that makes it nearly self working. Danny Archer has a version of this gaff as well.

I've seen this by Vinny and it's a cutey-pie alright. I would suggest all you guys take a peek at yet another little gem from the Godfather. Thanks Vinny for always coming up with ways to amaze with regular coins. Very well done, as usual. -MB
