In mentalism, you as the entertainer seeminly know information obtained from outside the scope of the normal 5 senses.

In hypnosis, you place 'sujects' into a 'hypnotic state' of consciousness. Kind of like a trance or deep sleep state. And while in this state, you control their actions and behaviors. Often with humorous results. But their is nothing supernatural or psychic about it.

The difference for many is that with hypnosis, the participants voluntarily are put into a sleepy state, with many that attempt to perform mentalism, the audience is unwillingly put to sleep.
