Richard Osterlind has done it again!
- shared with us from his experiences, thoughts, ideas and subtleties. I downloaded it Friday, and spent several hours yesterday reading Making Magic Real, Making Real Magic (both for the umphteenth time!). - and ESSAYS. I won't review it. The add on Osterlind's web site is a review more than good enough. Believe me, - everything in that add is more than correct. For those of you that actually THINK about what you do, and wish to do what you do even better, there is no way around it. Just get it! I take the liberty to quote Richard on the last lines of this book's preface (- I hope it is OK, Richard?!) - "For the last and final time, I sincerely hope the reader finds real value within these pages. I sincerely hope that he or she will examine his or her thinking and be somehow moved by what I write." Absolutely!! I won't go as far as to say that it should be prohibited by law to enter any stage or do any performance unless you have read Richard Osterlind's Triology. However, I will stand behind it until I drop dead, that reading these thoughts and advices, and understand and follow them will be of priceless value for you. If you do, I am more than certain about that this will make you stand out from the rest of the performing crowd, and lead to your well diserved success. Sven PS ---and DO NOT overlook ODDS!! I have been through an awfully lot of design duplication routines. This is the one I will use for the future!

Sven,
Can you single out any one of the trilogy as better than the others? Candini

Nope!
To me they fill eachother out to one sum total. Others might think differently, but it would be impossible for me, after having read all three of them, to single out the one I wouldn't (-or would, for that matter) be without. ....and while I'm at it, when you read Essays, pay special attention to the chapter "Wheat the Goose" - and THINK Sven

Hi Sven
Could you post a link to Richards site, the only one I could find was http://www.richardosterlind.com and I couldn't see any advert on there for his material, or maybe I just wasn't looking well enough. Thanks Al.

When I posted this review, the thread was locked and I was directed to this thread. My apologies for posting it separately; here it is in the rightful place.
Making Magic Real Making Real Magic These are the titles of Richard Osterlind's previous books, each available as e-books from his site. (The latter, at least, is also available as a print book -- because I found it at FunTyme Magic in Nashville.) Each book speaks of -- and teaches -- exactly what the titles say. This past year, Osterlind released the third in this trilogy: Essays. Not as action-oriented as the previous titles, but it follows logically from the last volume as the second volume followed from the first. In short, these three books really combine to become one magical whole. What's in Essays (How I wish the Café let us use italics!)? - Preface (This is almost as useful as any chapter you've ever read.) - Love & Magic (There is a LOT more to this than you'd suspect.) - Appearance (An earlier version appeared in *the Magic Menu* and, as Richard indicates, should really be common sense...but isn't.) - What Are You Trying to Accomplish as a Mentalist? (This advice works equally well for the question of "What are you trying to accomplish as a magician?") - What Are You Trying to Accomplish as a Magician? (See? I told you so.) - The Right Magic (This chapter is worth $100 to the semi-pro; a grand to the pro.) - Wheat the Goose (A short one-pager with a silly title which hits you where you live.) - Magic & Music (Not what you think; more on how to learn smarter.) - Magic & Comedy (See previous chapter. See if, after STUDYING these two chapters, your study of life doesn't significantly improve. Your audiences will thank you.) - Audience Management (Richard says "this may be the most important essay in this work;" which is saying something, considering this claim could be made for many of the other essays. Frankly, I think it's the culmination of the previous essays.) - Osterlind Design Duplication System (Want to duplicate an image in your spectator's mind -- even if they change their mind? Even if they're in a different room from you? No special props used -- this is one step removed from real mind-reading.) The topics seem varied, but they all revolve around making yourself a better performer. Warning: Osterlind bravely tackles the topic of ethics & morality, a topic which seems to be unpopular on the internet. http://www.osterlindmysteries.com/products.htm --- $25 for a $100 worth of book. Whatever you do, don't get it. If I'm the only one who reads this, I'll be several steps ahead of the rest of you. *jeep! --Chet

This afternoon I realized I had some money burning a hole in my pocket (I've got to get it out of that fire wallet....pause for groans) so I quickly ordered Mr. Osterlind's Essays. They are so much better than I had anticipated!
Anyway, there is a warning at the beginning against printing, photocopying, etc. I have heard that others have printed their copy (along with the first two ebooks in the series). Is this unlawful? Would I need permission from Mr. Osterlind to print this fine manuscript? I'd love to take it to my local print shop and have them run me off a nice bound copy but only if it can be done ethically. Any advice? |

I've also noticed an oft used error in the Wheat the Goose chapter. I wouldn't normally bring it up, but since I know we all have a bit of a perfectionist inside us (what magician/mentalist doesn't!) I thought I'd mention it (plus it makes for interesting dinner conversation...well, ok, it's not THAT interesting).
The species of goose in question is referred to as 'Canadian Geese'. Branta canadensis (the Canada Goose) derives it's name from the Canada tribe of native North Americans, not from the country of Canada. The correct terminology is, in the singular, Canada Goose, the plural of which is Canada Geese (my college degree is in ornithology). It's a minor point but it drives birders and ornithologists crazy! |

On 2005-02-13 09:15, Richard Osterlind wrote: Mr. Osterlind: I bought some nice parchment paper and printed off a clean copy of Essays (which will be bound tomorrow, assuming I can find the time to drop by Kinkos). I also ran off a 'working copy' on plain paper which has been furiously scribbled on as I jot down notes. I'm assuming your request was for my opinion of the manuscript and not the printed result (which looks magnificent, by the way). About three minutes into the read, I caught myself nodding my head as I read. This happened nearly the entire time I studied the essays. Everything you wrote I agreed with. As has been said previously by others, these essays do not present 'new information' but rather knowledge that has been with me this entire time, I just was not aware of it. In a few instances I had a moment of personal revelation. In fact, while reading the Audience Management essay, I even blurted out "So that's why it happened!" I even whipped up a set of impromptu ODDS cards from a stack of index cards and sent them through a test audience (my ever-patient wife) and the effect passed with flying colors. Granted, I was testing out the method and handling, not really going for the effect (I'll work on it for a few weeks before it is unleashed on the public). The first try with my wife, we compared our pictures and while they didn't look exactly alike, my wife said "Hey, we both drew a ******!". The second time was much more sucessful and she commented how similar the pictures looked (i.e. both items were facing the same way, had the same features and were drawn to the same size!). So even without the presentation, the effect was still quite remarkable to my I've-seen-them-all wife. Thank you, Mr. Osterlind, for putting out such a fantastic collection of Essays. These will go to the top of my frequently read magic material along with Michael Ammar's essays in his book The Magic of Michael Ammar and virtually anything written by Eugene Burger. All three of you have a gift for dissecting and distilling the innate wisdom behind what we are attempting to accomplish and presenting it in a way that can literally shake loose the dust of contentment. In short, you drive us to become a better person (and performer) and to contemplate the vast sky above (to steal an image from Wheat the (Canada! ) Goose). Cheers! Brandon |

Brandon,
I'm glad your copy came out so good. And I'm glad you see what I mean about the knowledge always being there. As for the ODDS effect, please use the same type of mental thinking I talk about in the whole trilogy. That is, once they have a card chosen, forget about the cards, method and everything else. Get yourself in the frame of mind that you are doing a real ESP test. Convince yourself that everything is legitimate and do it the way you would if you were being tested for real. Then, you don't even have to think about presentation. It will be totally automatic and you can't fail! Richard |
