Can anyone point me to a store in the UK (or Ireland even better!!!) that stocks the Joe Lefler Suitcase Table. I know this is the lil darlins forum - but there appears to be a good few UK based artists here...

I see 53 views with no answers. I think there may not be someone who can get for you in UK.
I'm from Singapore and I have to order it myself. :< Guessed that you might need to make order overseas. Or, if you can go to your magic dealer and ask them to order for you. They tend to have lower shipping cost when they order from their wholesaler in bulk. And, if there are any problem with the table, you can rely on the magic dealer to 'complain' to the wholesaler. That's what I did for JL table. I got mine from a help of my local dealer and I love my table a lot. :> I hope I can help you here. |

I would suspect that some dealer can import them. Lacking that you can do a web search and find someone who will ship it to you.
Doesn't Davenports carry them? I must urge you to SEE it before you buy it. The last two I bought were badly warped on the edges, so much so that the hinges couldn't hold the top up. Make sure your case comes from a better production run. |

I've never seen or found a box that I liked, so I've always made my own. I custom build it to my own design, size it to whatever show I'm building and it cost a fraction what it would cost for me to buy a dealer item.
Is there anyone else out there who builds their own box's.

I am currently waiting on a carpenter friend of mine to cut me some mdf so I can build my first rolon table.
My woodworking skills are very limited so we will have to see how it goes! Stu Di Doo |

Sorry, forgot to mention I am trying to find out where I can buy some of the same type of material he uses to cover the table.
Any ideas anyone? Works well with velcro signs etc, so I believe! Stu Di Doo |

By the time I've bought: twice as much wood as I needed (because I can't get a smaller sheet), five times the amount of paint (a quart instead of 1/2 cup), sandpaper, hardware, and there's always "something" that I either can't get or it's hard to make AND don't forget I'm paying retail for all this. Oh, and of course, the first attempt looks like $#@&, so I have to go through it all over again - and that's another weekend or two lost. And I'm describing my efforts to build a small box to produce my rabbit, I don't even want to think about a suitcase table. If you have the skills (and equipment) to build your own stuff, great. But I found out a long time ago, it's cheaper for me to buy what I need from my friendly dealer. |

I make a lot of my own stuff. I'm making my second suitcase table. I always ask myself: WHY BOTHER?! Cheaper to buy it. Time is money. Anyway, I do love making it--at least after I can think back with rose colored glasses. Pride and admirmation of my own work. Whatever.
Sometimes, for me, it's the only way to go because I can't find exactly what I want. It also makes me and my show distinctive; no one has a square circle that looks like mine. My first suitcase table was too heavy. I overbuilt it. This one is going to be just right. The fabric to cover it with is called Olefin. It's used to line the trunks of cars. You glue it on with spray adhesive, which is surprisingly strong stuff. Jim

Stu, MDF is a heavy material and not one I'd reccomend. my box's are biuld using 3mm ply, with 12mm square batten. The batten is used to strenghten all the jionts. 3mm not too expensive a sheet, and as me and billy build them together we halve the cost of the basic ingredients. If I was building it on my own, I'd just buy a smaller sheet.
Posted: Oct 20, 2004 4:03am ---------------------------------------- Sorry had to break and take Emma to School. The total cost of to build a box and paint and varnish it works out at about £35-£40. The majority of this is for the fittings and paint. I buy decent brass fittings, not cheap stuff I want the box to look it's best. Any extra paint left over is carefully stored in case emergency touch ups are required. I could include in this price signwriting the box, which would not cost much if I painted it on. However I get mine sign written proffessionally by the guy who did my car, it's an extra cost on top but it's worth it. Also if I'd bought a box from a dealer I'd have to have it done as well. Buy the time I've finished I'll have a custom made box, which looks realy proffessional and the total cost all together will be less than £60.

So it's as I suspected - it is difficult to find one in the dealers. My ability to screw two pieces of wood together is in the minus 20 rating. I guess I will just have to keep my eyes open.
Thanks for the responses guys - and thanks for the DIY tips. JB |

Panel pins and wood glue, all it takes is a good aim and a thumb with no sense of feeling

I got my roll on table from albion magic a few weeks ago and it is exellent (its the one that Ron Popple uses) it really is super. Iam very happy with it and it is perfect for my needs their is over £50 worth of hinges, paint, castors ect. like Stu my woodwork skills are limited but my Dad used to be a cabinet maker, now an accountant he doesn't really have much time to make big projects like tables. I don't think with all the fittings and the wood and the time to make it its not worth it.

When I first started I used a rolon table. I think it's in the beginners rule book somewhere, but as I progressed I found it didn't fit my requirements any long, and was a tad heavy. That's why I started making my own.
I love playing about with the wood and stuff, Plus there is the joy of creating/ making something yourself. I've just picked mine up from the signwritters and it looks really good. Billy and I built them with a curved front this time, and it's the dogs b*&&^%ks. If I had the space for a workshop I'd make loads and sell them.

Hi Matt, When I said about rolon tables and beginners, I didn't mean that only beginners seem to use them, I meant we all seem to use one when we start out. Some continue to use them, others move on to other designs until they find the perfect one for them. I'll E-mail you some pictures of the box I'm using at the moment, I can't show you the new one as there is a few finishing touches needed.

Oh, a Joe Lefler is like a Rolon is it? I see now.
We've now been through the 'Rolon' years. However after just a few weeks use we took the wheels off them, as some old hall stages were built before the spirit level gauge was invented. I suppose these days you could use those locking wheels - similar to what is probably on your computer workstation. Rolon on unbraked wheels also had a mind of it's own in estate cars/vans etc. Do any of you use crushed velvet tablecloths with fancy hems by the way. So easy to make - and can make those side tables you use for tape/CD decks, storage etc. look so good. Tony. |

Refering to what Clive said about it feels good to make your own stuff, every once a while I make something, I made a nice side table with a music stand base and a velvet covered table top, it does feel good to have something in your show that I made.
Look forward to seeing the pics Clive. Matt |
