Does anyone have a specific way of storing cards etc. If I want to carry 8 different packs of cards what is the best way to ensure their seperation ready for a deck change ?

Have you already considered reducing the number of packs you need to perform with?
Or are you're perfoming an effect that really requires 8 packs, by itself? If you're carying 7 decks for 7 different effects you might want to consider dumping 5 of them and use other kinds of material. That is a lot of decks of cards. If you're convinced you need them all then perhaps you could fashion yourself some jacket pocket dividers. You could use cardboard or soft glasses cases that you cut to suit your needs. If your jacket has a topit and pocket dividers, you've got a lot of room for decks. Good Luck.

Depending on your jacket you are using. You could make pockets inside of your jacket and in your outside pocket of your jacket to seperate couple of deck and other magic items. |

I use a vest and I had a local seamstress make up packet size pockets inside. Eight is a lot of pockets though.

My Mom made me some pocket dividers.
Once everything is divided properly, it just takes practise to learn where everything is. |

Steve Dushek used to market a dove vest that had six pockets for hiding doves. I use this under my jacket to hold cards and other close-up props. It serves several purposes.
First, by having compartments, I always know where everything is located. I put the same things in the same pockets prior to every engagement. Second, there is no fumbling in a pocket searching for the right item. So I can immediately reach in and pull out the right deck of cards or prop at the right moment without any awkward transition. Third, by wearing a vest, it maintains the lines of the jacket. When you carry a lot of stuff in your jacket, it pulls on the shoulders and the lapel of your jacket and creates unsightly bulges in your pockets. Sooner than later, you will have to buy another jacket because of the destruction to the padding. yours, Scott

I would never perform 8 'deck tricks' on one evening. I prefer ordinary playing cards. I think 8 different decks is way too much - reduce it! Otherwise people might not trust you - they won't accept you as a magican if you need a different deck of cards for every miracle you perform!

Eight decks! Reminds me of Uncle Freddie, before his briefcase full of trick decks was stolen.
Freddie worked for Shakey's Pizza Parlor, back in the 1960's and 1970's. He did balloon animals and strolling magic in all of the parlors in Houston. He had a complete lack of self-confidence. His briefcase looked like an ad for the Fox Lake card company. Those of you who are less than 40 years old probably don't remember Fox Lake cards with the same fondness that we "AK's" do, but that was Haine's label for Aviator bridge cards. He had EVERY TRICK DECK Haines manufactured -- about 40 in all. And he used each one of them. One night, when he was in Nashville, someone broke into his car and stole his briefcase. There was no way he could replace all of those cards. And his insurance didn't cover him. So he came crying to me, literally, and I told him to learn how to do sleight of hand. Eventually he learned his basics. And he re worked his whole kit. He wound up with a half dozen decks of cards. He had an AMY deck, an ID, and a couple of regular decks. He realized that was all he really needed. He kept a few packets set up, and that was it. When I go out on a gig, I have four decks of cards. I have two regular decks set up for two routine sets. One of these goes in my right trousers pocket, the other in my left trousers pocket. I have an ID in my right back trousers pocket, and the setup I use for my card in wallet in my left jacket pocket. The right jacket pocket carries the coins for my CSB routine, and the color changing knives. Right vest pocket contains the coins for the silver dollar routine. The coins for the ungaffed scotch and soda are in a coin purse in my right trousers pocket. The rest of the props are scattered strategically where they need to be. I have a tote bag with spares that goes in a hidey hole somewhere in the room I'm working. That's all I need. I can stroll for four hours without having to use anything else. The one packet trick I use is in the bill compartment of my card in wallet setup. I can perform

That should have read I can perform four hours of strolling without having to refill my card in wallet setup more than once.

Don't misconstrue my earlier post regarding the dove vest. I don't recommend carrying eight decks of cards either. I am suggesting that you use the vest to hold your other smaller props (i.e. chop cup, small apparatus, etc.) And usually whatever you have in the pockets will be more than enough to entertain for hours.

Frank, Silver, and Bill are right on. Diversify a working repertoire so that one can perform a dozen or so different effects with a non-gaffed deck (or with a single gaffed deck than can be used for effects not requiring the gaff). It will allso allow you to perform effects with a borrowed deck of cards, should a spectator choose to ask you to perform tricks with their deck.

I rarely do packet tricks anymore. But there was a time when, if it was for sale, I bought it.
My in-coat pocket system for keeping them separate was made by cutting plastic file folders at the fold into three smaller folders that were playing card size. When stacked one into the other (like a book), the three gave five compartments for packets. Tab the center one (on both sides) and the two next to it. You'll never have to look. When you get off work, just pop it all into a plastic bag. Even when a packet got wet (bars, parties and trade shows) it did not wet the other packets or your clothes. Bob Magic By Sander |
