Richard Osterlind's new e-book, Essays, has got to be the most important work on performing in real life that has ever been written.

There are tip's in it that would take years to learn on your own! And even then you may not have learned enough to even compare with what Richard teaches in this Highly important work.

Recently I've been far more worried about my performance then effects. I've been watching other performers literally just go through the motions without any wonderful touches that make a performance gold and worrying if I sometimes I look like that. Richard's book has answered many of the questions I have had.

In particular I found his chapter on Appearance and audience management to be like finding what was missing from life itself. This book will perfect a positive approach and thinking for mentalists and magicians alike.

Too many posts have been popping up complaining about other performers in our art lately, and so many of us trying to tackle problems that sometimes seem to have no real answer. Richard gives the real-world answers, that his performances work and that he has such high status is no accident.

This I feel will iron out a lot of wrinkles in this wonderful art and hopefully make us all as modest, humble and professional in attitude as Richard, while restoring a true love of our art.

I highly recommend this book to all, and to the newer people to mentalism, this book should skip you a great deal of misinformation you may have picked up or will end up picking up.

Thank you so much for writing this book Richard. I'm only sad it's the last in your trilogy.

Man, I want to check this book out.

How is the drawing duplication thing in it?
Thanks! Scott B.

Hell!

When is PayPal going to be supported in my country? I'm missing all the good stuff for this BIG problem!

I've been waiting for this e-book since Mr. Osterlind started to mention it here on the Café sometime ago.

Gosh, what country are you in? (I was under the impression PayPal works anywhere.)

And it should be said that Osterlind is absolutely brilliant; it's a privilege to read his writing.

Is Essays better than the other two E-books he has as part of the trilogy?

Candini,

I think the question does not lay on whether Essays is better or not, but if one is serious about magic, it is better to get the trilogy as a whole.

It's the same as if you are asking which chapter is the best in 'Strong Magic'.

I've got say, I think this book is golden and makes an excellent final section of the trifecta (Making Real Magic & Magic Magic Real being the first two).

The thoughts are clear and on point, the tips are detailed and important (as HW said above, this is the stuff that you'd normally have to learn "the hard way") and the design duplication, in my opinion, is wonderful. It's logical and impressive, not difficult (mechanics wise...we all know the presentation is the most important thing!) and can be done under VERY stringent conditions...

Thanks! I read some of the reviews about this and already have his Mind Mysteries series.

I read one where this had been compared with Derron
Brown's "Absolute Magic," I believe.

Hi Juan,

Before Paypal came to the UK (I live in Denmark), I had no problems opening a Paypal account in the US. So I think you can just go to the UK site if you live in Europe and open an account.

Ahh, and don't buy this book, it's way too good for everyone to read. I just bought all three books in the trilogy last week, and they are full of great learning experiences. I read them in the weekend, and now I will pick the individual sections out and read them carefully.

Great material, as always from Mr. Osterlind.

I think quite a lot has been thinking of exactly the ODDS-like effect and there has been a lot of different applications out in the market for a long time. I started thinking about a similar concept because I was unhappy with the "Minds-Eye-Deck". I like the method a lot, but not the deck itself. So I started making my own drawings on index cards with different shapes.

However, Osterlind's version has clearly been finetuned over the years and he also changed the concept of drawings towards words, which in my view creates a stronger effect. So I'll change my index cards and give the ODDS a try - with the right presentation it should be a great one.

Yes Vraagaard, the main point of departure is the word fact. That is what takes it into a different realm and makes it much closer to a real ESP demonstration. I have never seen this idea anywhere, although I don't see everything, of course. This is no pipe dream and I have been doing it for decades without ever tipping it to anyone.

A wonderful final chapter to the trilogy, Richard, I loved reading it, immensely. I was a little upset, however, that you spoke so much about grooming hair - I was hoping for some insight for those of us that are more folliclely challenged Smile

I'm hoping to perform ODDS at the Café Royal on Halloween. I'll let you know how it goes.

Good luck with the show at the Café Royal and let me know how it goes!

About the hair thing, just extend the advice about makeup a little!

Richard, I do hope I didn't seem cocky/self absorbed - your Challenge Magic tape was the main reason I got into mentalism, and the BCS has allowed me to perform minor miracles.

I look forward to trying the ODDS to hopefully allow for more "miracles"

Somthing I thought I should add. Richard Talkes about creating mystery in Eassays, I've had his words from the book going through my head for the past few days.

Today I was just passing a friend in my day job and for the fun of it asked him could I borrow a coin, marked it and bent it in frount of him and returned the bent marked coin and continued on my way down the corrodor, my friend was flabbergasted, kind of just stood on the spot saying somthign along the lines of" that just can't happen".
After words Richards words on creating mystery kept going through my head and I found had indeed altered my thinking, I no longer thought I had done a wonderful effect, I now knew I had created an inexplainable mystery for my friend which unless he ever takes up mentalism will never find an explanation and even then he may not find the answer.
This si only a tiny example of how richards Book has affected me, I find myself regaining my entusiam for even the smallest effects.
