Has anyone got an address or website for silver dollars (Morgans) in England.I have found one for £25 but this sounds a little expensive.

Have you checked your local Coin Shop?
Ebay is also a good and affordable source for these.

Why use morgans when you have Crowns?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Simple reason: Crowns are about twice the thickness of Morgans!

I just don't like the look of Crowns and I think(correct me if I'm wrong) they are heavier.

If you live in London, there is a coin shop near Charing Cross, in Cecil Court. On the same road, a bit further down there is a shop that not only sells normal old (second hand) books, but the owner is a magician, so there are quite a few seond hand magic books...some of which are worth looking at.
The coin shop had run out of Morgan's when I went, but I did manage to pick up some old half crowns from 1817...these are really worn, and great for effects like 3 fly etc. also they are the same coins that Ramsay used when he created his Cylinder and Coins routine (they cost about £6 per coin, for the most worn ones). I'm in England, but I use US State Quarters who do a good mail order service - in fact I received some Morgan dollars today! You can get good condition 1921 dollars from about $14 each, that's about £7 plus postage.

If you are wanting to get a shell at the same time, I suggest you buy Joe Porper's dollar shell set. They come with 4 dollars, with identical dates (for those perfectionists)...i bought the set for $120 when at the MAGIC Live convention...Paul Wilson was selling the same (porper) set at Blackpool in February for £100...almost double the price!

You can find all the coins you want at good prices on ebay. Just search "Morgan dollars" or whatever kind you want.
There are some great, unusual coins if you search "foreign coins" or "Oriental coins"

Hi
The £5 coin in the UK is nice to work with and the public are interested in it. "I did not know that we had a £5 coin" is a normal reaction and they love to pick them up and examine them - So they have built in misdirection for UK audiences. Paula

In the US, (or at least in California) coin shops generally have somewhat worn coins (what they call junkers, and what a magician calls soft coins) for under $10 (last time I bought some).
Soft coins don't make noise when rubbed across each other during a routine. |

Also, watch the price of silver. When you see its down a bit go to a coin shop (or look online if your overseas) and ask the dealer you want to see thier Morgan Silver Dollars, ask to see their "commons" I believe 1921 is the largest year for circulation. The commons are of little or no intrest to collectors due to their conditon. But are plenty fine for coin work. Most dealers sell their commons based on the current price of silver.

I don't know if they're still available, but the Owens dollar size palming coins are "soft" with a great milled edge.

You can find Morgan Silver dollars on Ebay ranging from good condition, ie little nusmismatic value, for about $8 a piece in quantity, to around $10.00 dollars U.S.

The reality on Ebay is that they run 12-15. The occasional sales goes through for less, but most hover low until the end of the auction and then go for the usual price.

When my great grandfather died he left a large assortment of coins to me as inheritance.
No Morgan silver dollars though. There are other coins of similar size if you cannot get your hands on some Morgan silver dollars. |

Even in the U.S. where Morgan Dollars are plentiful in coin shops, the British equivalent of 25 American dollars may be the normal price. I recently paid that much for a 1925 MS-63 Peace Dollar to match a Peace Dollar shell which I use. So, it all just depends on the quality as well, of course. Now, if a soft, well-worn Morgan Dollar is priced that high anywhere, I'd say you should look elsewhere as well. That is surely too expensive for a soft coin in the U.S. However, in the U.K., where supplies may be more limited, it may just be the going rate.
