Hi,
I'm gettin into the Cups and balls, and I was very intrigued with Johnny Paul's sponge ball routine.... but a few months ago I already purchased some nice wooden cups, and know I found out that the model of the cups is essential for this routine. Buying new cups is not quit an option (I spend already too much in the last month on all kind of dvd's and magic accesoires). Besides Johnny Paul's routine I know Charlie Millers' and Ammar's, but is there another routine with "regular" cups that doesn't need the use of a wand. (in the setting that I work in, a wand doesn't koo very well) thanks Coen PS: (I did a forum search, saw a lot of names, but I'm not certain which one will suit best) |

Maybe I'm missing something. The only things you really need a wand for is one or two vanishes (although the wand is also useful for misdirection). Most of this is optional. You can work your way around most routines simply by using alternate vanishes.

Mark Wilsons cups & Balls from his "Complete Course in Magic" book is a great routine. It isn't taught with a wand. You might want to try out the wand later. A wand will make some of the vanishes easier to sell, and give you some options for some fancy moves.

You can do just about any routine without a wand. You can also use a long ink pen in lieu of a wand.

Thanks,
I see I'm jumped this one fairly quick. I thought I needed the wandto make the loading of the balls more convincing. ....back to the dvd player Coen |

The wand is useful, but not essential.
I'll beat Pete Biro to the punch on this one -- Charlie Miller used the cardboard tube from a coathanger for a wand.

I do my cups and balls without a wand... Never used a wand in shows... I thought about having one in the act many times but that is one more prop and only so many pockets.
See the cups and balls video at my web site. The insperations were Dai Vernon who used a wand. And Jim Ryan who didn't...

Hi,
Dan Fleshman has a routine (more than one I think) that does not use a wand. Check it out Ronnie Lemieux Montreal Canada

I know Dan Fleshman very well in fact he is one of my best friends. His cups and balls routine is very good and I have seen it many times...
I think it is also on his DVD set that L and L put out... I recomend anything by Dan Fleshman and consider him one of the top all stars of magic performing today...

Check out Steve Draun's routine in Secrets Draun from underground. A variation of the Vernon routine, to be done seated, with no wand. I however Love the wand. When I take it out, screw it together and polish the tip. At first they think it's silly, but by the time I use it for the first vanish, and give it a few spins; they realize its use is important and very serious.

I am simply in love with the wand. For goodness sake - A Vernon Wand Spin, properly done, is absolutely undetectable. I've seen Michael Ammar do it and although you know what is happening, you know when it is happening, it is literally impossible to see.
More than just that one spin though. When you are holding a wand the spectator just doesn't imagine that you could be palming a little one inch ball as well. |

Carl Andrews has a DVD... "Table Hopping Cups and Balls" He uses a Magic Marker... at one point he does the coin from the cap bit.. but with a ball.
Plus the Magic Marker makes the striking vanish easier due to the shorter length. Also since it is a marker you could use it with any of your card signings or coin markings as well. Eric Falconer Houston TX

I can't immagine doing a routine without a wand. I know that it would take weeks to get over the habit of reaching for it after each vanish. I use a simple 13 inch long 1/2 inch diameter oak dowel. It is stained like my table and has several coats of polyurethene. It works well as a thumper for the streets.
I will also do Carl Andrews' routine from time to time.

I'm still not convinced that a Sharpie is a good substitute for a wand. The public has certain expectations of a magician.

One thing: don't you ever come up with your own routines and sleights of hand? I my own Cubs and balls routine I use only my own ideas. Why? Couse its another greater felling, using your own stuff!

Quote: Hehehe..also I don't know Aunt Jemima, and I hope her pancakes are gooooood, I think using a wand also adds to a bit of *by-play/mystery*, whatever one would call it, getting the attention of the spectators, and for *us* making it possible to display a bit of skill (wand-spins).
On 2004-10-22 01:06, mike gallo wrote: Also mind those guys, one does use a wand (at least can use it) for f.ex. beforehand -if the C&B is ones strongest closer- for a borrowed ring on wand routine, using a perspex wand, and here again I have to mention Joachim Solberg, who does an incredible handling re this, learned from Michael Skinner.. Michael Skinner DOES'NT have it on his video/DVD re the *Ring on wand*, but it was described in Genii once...and Joachim has altered the handling a tiny bit and to the best of my knowledge, he does it better then anybody else.. I use it too occationally, and I use a slighly diff. handling re *throwing* the *real* ring on the wand, under the hand holding the center, where it gets in a kind of thumb-palm, not the one one would expect, but I catch it in kind of a Ramsay palm....those knowing it, will know the difference between a normal thumb-palm and the Ramsay one.. A bit risky of doing it -throwing it-, but when it works (it does), it is a great thing..it often also adds some sound.. Sorry for the off topic remarks.. BUT, it isn't *dumb* to use a wand for vanishing the balls, mind you, the GREAT move of Roy Bensons re his Bowl routine, where the wand IS needed.. Oh well, one can do almost the same vanish without using the wand, when sitting at a table.. I use it in the version of AGs spongeball routine, but standing up, the wand actually is a PLUS for the C&B. Another example is Albert Goshamn doing the Benson Bowl without the use of the wand, and without having an extra sponge ready right from the beginning.. Now, THAT is great..in case of Albert I assume, he did cut down re carrying props as much as possible, and so discarted the use of the wand, and when HE does it, it is just great.. Neverthelæess, I would always use a wand IF I would do the C&Bs, but I soley do the Benson Bowl and here I love to use the wand, as I also use it for tapping the Bowl when it is opening up getting a great bell-like sound, and it makes vanishing the sponges a childs-play, using basically -in another handling- Roy Benson's move.. Though I vary the last of the 3 vanishes by using AGs toss-vanish there! So my advice is to use a wand, for several reasons, like adding some *mystery*.. ! You can also use a bamboo wand, to achive the *mystrey*, that I first saw Ken Brooke using for his C&B, way back in 1961..and I made up one that is assembled out of 2 halfparts for easier carrying..
Learn a few things well.....this life is not long enough to do everything.....
( Words of wisdom from Albert Goshman ...it paid off for him - it might as well for YOU!!!- My own magic is styled after that motto... ) |
