I want to learn a cups and balls routine.
I just bought a set, that includes a chop cup and a gimmicked ball. Which routine would you suggest. My thinking is that it would be easier if I bought a video. Sooo,, the big question is... which one??? |

IMHO, Michael Ammar’s set would be the best. Everything is covered thoroughly. That’s the best choice. Have fun!!

Ammar has both a book and video's on the cups and balls. He is a great teacher, you can't go wrong with him.

There’s a great chop cup routine in the new Don Alan book, "In A Class By Himself". That’s the name of the book.

Check out Aldo Colombini’s Lasting Impressions videos. There is a fantastic and easy cups and balls routine.
Aldo is just amazing with this prop. I have seen him do things that I have never seen anyone else do. To me, he is one of the best and all of his routines with the cups and balls are worth studying. Aldo won a FISM award with one of his cups and balls routines. _________________ Thank you, John Zander *************************** The Award Winning Comedy Magic of John Zander http://www.ZanderMagic.com http://www.AllMagic.net ***************************

I'd do with Ammar's set. He is very detail in his explaination. The video also has some history on the C&B. All sleights are taught so that you can come out with your own routine.

Think I'll start out with the Ammar tape.
BTW does he cover the chop cup as well in this video? Thanks to everyone for your response. This web site has been a great resource for me... |

Both Aldo and Michael are awesome performers, each having their own approach to this timeless classic.
Either one you choose would certainly help you in your quest to master the cups. _________________ Life is not a problem to be solved... but a mystery to be lived.

You need to get Shute's CUPS, CUPS, CUPS, which is only about $6. It has some good instruction, and includes routines with the Combo set, like you have purchased.
Another COMBO set routine is the Mendoza Cups & Balls routine plus Sequel. Doug Atkinson |

Stevens' Magic has an outstanding Cups and Balls tape which features many modern magicians who brought the standard for cups and balls to a greater height. It is well worth checking out.

If your able, be sure to check out Penn and Teller perform the cups and balls. It's incredible. I get inspired to break out the ol cups every time I watch it.
I too can vouch for the Ammar and Aldo tapes though, be sure to pick them up if you have the chance. _________________ Persistence - Is the ability to overcome all obstacles between you and your goals.

I got the Ammar tapes recently, and they are
good (and interesting) but nothing on the Chop Cup. Joe |

There aren't too many videos dedicated to the chop cup. Brad Burt has one, but I wasn't too crazy about it.
Most of the moves will be the same as for the cups and balls. So, if you have a routine describing a Combo Set routine and a good video to see the cups in action, you should be pretty well set. Doug A. |

This is an old thread, but I’m glad to see the suggestions being brought back to the front.
It is easy to make the mistake of assuming fancier, more complex routines are better than basic routines. I think for a beginner, a straightforward routine like the one in Mark Wilson’s Complete Course is the best starting point. It doesn’t use difficult sleights or depend on great timing and acting like Tommy Wonder’s or the opening of Ammar’s. It forms a solid foundation to get performance time with a true classic and is still mystifying and entertaining. Ammar’s book and videos are more encyclopedic than truly instructive. They are a valuable toolbox, but I needed a basic routine before I got much from them. My advice to a beginner is learn a 3 minute routine and perform it several times before adding to it. Patrick |

The MENDOZA routine mentioned near the beginning here is really hard to beat. Be sure to get the Sequel, too.
For a very good professional appearing routine with NO COMBO GIMMICK, I suggest you track down the Now You See It books by Bill Tarr. You cannot go wrong with the well written and superbly illustrated Cups & Balls routine AND there's an abundance of other material (not just C&B) you will definitely use. Enjoy your search! Julie |

I agree that John Mendoza was a joy to watch performing Cups and Balls. He had a relaxed presentation which I enjoyed and am very happy that I had the opportunity to tell him that. John was a nice guy and is certainly missed.
Shortly before his passing, I asked him for advice about purchasing a set and he was quite helpful! My go to set is a combo set which John liked to use. |
