I jst read through the whole manuscript and even the ideas by Paul Harris and Angelo Carbone are great. It makes you think, and how to think out of the box. At least for me it was a lesson in thinking creatively. And the illusion is certainly doable. Would like to try it out as well. Very deceptive and in the genre of his laser sawing and the floatation. The props need to be well built though.

This just goes to show that you can put out any old rubbish and there will be some who laud it to high heaven. If you guys think you are furthering the cause of magic by supporting this kind of thing well...I just despair.

This is the same rambling that goes on when Jay Sankey puts out his effects. I wonder.

Angelo,
I have no doubt that the concept outlined by Steve will work, what I have a problem with is that this is not a vanish. if you don't reappear then the spectator will reappear you pretty darn quickly so, as somebody has already mentioned, this is a 1 second "whoah" and then the spectator realises what has happened. This is a prank not a vanish. By the way I do think the monkey illusion is a good idea, but that wasn't the vanish that I was buying so nice idea, but can I have my vanish please! Dr Magic, thanks for your sarcasm but I am afraid that I won't be a sheep herded into the latest emperors new clothes story by approaches like that. Put it this way, if I had had that idea, which I didn't , I wouldn't have had the temerity to offer it for a dollar. NB Buy yourself a Pena coin or a couple of thumb tips. Niva , I understand from your many posts that you like everything, great, I like a positive attitude. I just tend to be a bit more discriminatory. Some of sankeys stuff is great, some is crap, IMHO.

This whole argument can be looked at in different ways. If you bought a $35 DVD and there was one effect you didn't like would you be upset? Depending on the number of effects on the DVD this could equal out to $7.
On the other hand Mr. Fearson advertised this like it was the "messiah" of the self vanish. Furthermore, if you read his blog there was something that he added at the last minute that was not originally supposed to be included. I believe this to be the "monkey vanish". So would this still be worth $7 without this included? |

I've bought some stuff from Steve Fearson before and was happy with it, so I'm a little surprised by the controversy.
I'm not really interested in the impromtu vanish, but could anyone review or describe the monkey vanish a little more. Could it be used on stage... and how big of a monkey can you vanish? Just kidding...but I would like to know if it is practical in a stage environment.

"HAHA Liber T !! HAHAH Did you buy this trick? Or just sign up here because you have a beef with Fearson? Ha!" If you are NOT an alias of Steve Fearson, than you must have one awesome stake in the profits. |

I bought it. I have some thoughts.
If one were to perform a trick and at the moment of "revelation" the spectator was fooled, but 10 seconds after they knew exactly what happened, would that be a good trick? I think that the Fearson vanish could deliver the initial moment of wonder, but the vanish is incomplete. For most, 10 seconds after the moment, the spectator will NOT believe you vanished. BUT, is that to say that this product is worthless? I don't think so. I think that moment, for what it is, can be a lot of fun. Definately $7 fun. If you have ever seen Williamson, King, or Harlan do "their" vanish you know how much "fun" can be had out of something like this. I do think Fearson is a victim of his own reputation/advertising. Also, I don't know if I would have advertised this as a true vanish. Instead: "Imagine being alone in a room with a spectator. Any room. You stand before her and perform a simple series of actions. She closes her eyes for a fraction of a second, still feeling you right next to her. The moment she opens her eyes, all she sees is an empty room. Imagine the chills which will go down her spine. At this moment you can either jump out and give her a little scare, or just let her in on the gag. Believe me, this will be a moment she'll remember for quite some time." That is an accurate ad and I would have eliminated a lot of the imagined "perfectness" of what many hoped this to be. Brad |
