I just tried this. I wasn't holding out much hope for it, honestly, but here are the results:

Subject: Extreme Skeptic Mom Smile
Location: Living Room

First, I told my mom I just wanted her tips for the trick. I intended on using her to practice on, then trying it out at school, but this is the only "test" I need before I can perform it. My mom didn't like the idea of my fingers on here eyelids, but she went with it. It's worth mentioning that I never fooled her with the old "poltergeist" PK touches effect. Anyway, here's what happened.

I conditioned her as Steve describes in the manuscript, and then I finally did the "move". My mom opened up her eyes when she felt my fingers leave her eyelids and started looking around and laughing. She was really confused for a solid 5 seconds, and then she turned around and realized I was sitting in a chair behind her. She said that she could tell exactly when I ran away because my fingers left her eyes. Maybe I didn't explain so clearly, so I did it again.

Same result, except this time her eyes snapped open the second she felt my fingers leave her eyelids. She was really confused now Smile. She liked it, but said that the appearing behind the person seemed like a weak ending. I'd have to agree here, and I'm going to try to work something out with that, but the method here works even if the Poltergeist effect doesn't really work on people. I really recommend trying this before you slag on it too much.... I was VERY surprised that she got roasted so bad by it Smile.

For the record, I'm a fan of Fearson's other work, but the Station Manager really p*ssed me off. This redeems him and then some in my book. I really want to thank him for this one... god I'm still in shock that it worked so well on my most skeptic spectator lol.

So try it out! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, and I recommend it. It's a steal for $7. If I come up with any good "reappearance" ideas I'll probably post them in Secret Sessions.
Thanks for reading,
Ian

OK being one that purchased the effect, I don't understand what all the hype is/was about. It's not groundbreaking, nor for everyone.

It DOES have potential as a stage effect given the right conditions. I guess I should say as a closer for another effect most should already know. David

I'm a little suprised at all the whining.

I bought it, I like it. Yes, it's an old trick, except for the finger position idea, which makes getting behind them possible.

When I read about appearing behind them I immediately thought of a premise.
You have the ability to "pass through people" OR for the bizarrist, you are a vampire that moves at super speed.

Come on guys, if you say "Hey look lets try something." do the effect and then ask the what they think, is that good magic? I say no.

All magic needs premise and setup. There are a few exceptions, but all magic is BETTER with premise or background and "framing"

Most of the people here are saying they tried it on their families. I don't think family is a good indicator of a strong trick.

The monkey vanish is killer. I am going to build this one for sure. Face it, a stage illusion that can be built for less than $400, doesn't need assistants, and will kill as an opener.

Just my opinion,
James
ps
for the record, Fearson is wrong about Paul Harris and Angelo coming up with different approaches. The mirror in the tube is also in AOA. They talk about the mylar mirro and the spectator will see his own eye, then they segue into talking
about whether or not the spec will recognise her own eye.

Not to take away from Angelo [you genius you] I'm sure he thought of it on his own.

I just purchased the effect. My money has vanished, but that's about it. Is this like PT Barnum's Egress?

Yes, I am a magician. No I did not make my hare (hair) disappear... it just took early retirement.

Just read through The Goodbye Vanish, and I have to agree with some previous posts that the manuscript is actually very interesting, and a nice look at the creative process. It's well written, with good photos and illustrations.

Reminds me of Corinda's Power Of Darkness, which is a classic. And Angelo Carbone's ideas are very clever and worthy of further development.

And.....it's $6.95.

sounds like an effect that Andrew Mayne recently released in his new book "The Secret Illusion Show"
Quote:
Five illusions that fit inside a briefcase:
ARRIVAL The magician appears on an empty stage
PASSAGE The magician steps through a spectator
TELEPORTATION The magician vanishes
GHOST A handkerchief is caused to dance
THE ESCAPIST The magician makes his exit

notice "Passage", also notice Teleportation.........

Except Fearson's version uses no props at all, no set up either.

I have Mayne's book too and it is very good, but this is different.

For me, apart from the two tricks, it was a lesson in thinking creatively and it got me thinking as well. There is another idea in there which is very very interesting and has potential.

Hello J608. So you remember Corinda's Powers of Darkness, so very good. I was just looking at the manuscript over the weekend, it must be at least 40 years old.

I really do like Fearson stuff and the way he thinks. I think the Goodbye Vanish is good enough for the price BUT....... This is from his blog:

Disclaimer: I am not trying to hype up this trick I’m trying to give some insight into what I’m up to. If you are reading this and think you are famous enough that we need to discuss selling exclusive rights for this I’d be more than happy to sell them to you for a period of one year for $50,000 USD. Start by putting that in my Paypal account and I’ll get back to you.

$50000 for this?????? or is he holding the real one back???
I would love to hear the real story behind those words of his.

Wow guys, the more I read the more I'm changing my mind about the manuscript. I'm actually starting to like it. My 'review' was an impulsive one from an impulse purchase. I'll build the Monkey Vanish soon and I'll post a review. Thank you.

Sometimes it is hard not to get conned when other magic supplier change a name of old routine & create a new name. Then without checking we purchase the tricks & found out the "real" truth of the tricks. And Pena Coin is one of them..

Jessiah,

Yes, you can purchase it without PayPal. Look for the Clickit Link.

I finaiilly downoaded the effect.

Steve is the master of pre-promotion. It's worth every penny of $6.95... Especially the script he provides for when you reveal yourself. A brilliant creative piece of prose.

I'd give the effect a thums up, but you couldn't see it because I've vanished.

Bottom line, I feel I've gotten my money's worth.
