How do you start hooking your thumb in the loop of the dancing cane during the middle of your performance? Is the loop taped on the tip of the cane or is there any other way to get that loop in your thumb. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi
I use a little wax to hold in in place and as it is picked up my finger goes into the loop. Paula

I will have my box jumper hand me the cane. When she does my thumb enters the loop made by her holding it open with her finger.
I sometimes will lay the cane across my table with the loop open and to one side of the cane. When I am ready I just pick the cane up as I place my thumb into the loop. I have been doing this for years and never had any bad luck with it. Ray |

My setup is a little different in that the gimmick retracts into the cane itself. All I need to do is run my thumb up the cane and it's in position. The other nice thing about this setup is that there is no "clean up" necessary at the end of the effect.

Wow... many of us think way too hard.
Here's what I've been using for nearly 12 years now, and it has NEVER failed! On the side of the top ferrule of the cane, I adhere a small length of double-sided, clear tape. Then, I just open the loop of t****d a little bit and stick the two sides of the loop to the surface of the tape. This method works beautifully, and I am able to perform many cane flourishes (finger roll, cane spins, etc... while the t****d loop is still stuck to the tape). I have never found a simpler, and sure-fire way of keeping the loop ready. If you'd like, you are more than welcome to visit http://www.magickits.com -or- http://www.magicmafia.com and order my Dancing Cane Lecture book, or my Dancing Cane DVD. I go into great detail both in the book and the DVD, about the gimmick. I even teach the 'Double loop' hook-up system (as I've found the cane floats much more vertically, and there's better control with my hook-up.) Hope this helps, - - Troy

Troy,
Your method sounds great for you but, I hate using tape! What could be easier then just picking the cane up off your table and being ready to go? You can still do spins and finger rolls while being hooked up. Ray |

Ray;
I suppose other methods could be easier, but personally, I don't like the length of t****d hanging and swinging (possibly getting in the way and caught up) as I perform the cane flourishes. My canes do not incorporate a retractable gimmick, so the double-sided tape method has worked for me all these years. Also, the loop goes over my index finger and not my thumb. With this hook-up, my hands are much more relaxed and don't have that terrible 'stiff' look as I've seen too many times when the loop is over the thumb. I do like your idea of having your assistant get you prepped, but I don't perform my cane routine with an assistant. With the tape method, the gimmick remains tight against the surface of the cane until pulled free after the hook-up. - - Troy

Little things like these make us all different!
I am glad that we both have our own way of doing things. The main point is to entertain! Ray |

Hey guys, Many thanks for your suggestions. I am teaching my 17 year old daughter how to perform the dancing cane and this setup is the last thing I have to solve. We will try all your suggestions. Thanks again!!!
