I've been doing versions of the 16 number math square (Perfect Solution) for a couple of years now, and the reaction it gets is overwhelming. I threw away the board and do it either on a white board or in a pad of paper. If I'm working with my wife, I "send" her the information, and she does the square.
I do it in my stand-up comedy act, my corporate act, my touring act for troops overseas, anywhere there is an adult audience it always goes over BIG! To the point (and I'm not selling it), I've noticed one for sale on a popular auction site for magicians for months without any takers. I would just like to say (and again, I'm not selling it, nor do I know who is), if you are looking for something really solid and easy to do, look into this. |

I didn't think much of the effect until I saw Derren Brown do it live in his stage show. It was truly awesome.
Trust anyone who has gone through it.

I don't think I'm familiar with the effect.
Is it anything like the big square where you can force something by counting to it in various ways? (It depends on how you rotate the board.) If not then please explain. |

Hi Cougar,
This is a routine where you take any two digit number from 40 to 90 and make a grid of 4 x 4 and it comes up with 24 combinations (all the lines across, all the lines down, diagonals, corners and many more) all adding up to the chosen number. It really impresses people, and it's soooo easy to do. RJE |

So, what are the sources for this effect? Where can we read about it?

Ah magic squares, but I don't think 4x4 is that impressive. I've been doing it with 6x6 for years now.

I'm not sure I follow...

The magic square I perform upon occasion is Chuck Hickok's Einstein's Demise (sp?). It's really strong in my opinion, and if you see Chuck perform it, his patter is wonderful!
Kind thoughts, Kennedy

It is worth comparing the different versions before you learn one. Some are easier than others. Chuck Hickock's Einstein's Demise Kennedy mentioned is one of the easier ones and my preferred version.

To try to answer the original question...
...a Magic Square effect can be boring as h*** and is likely to be if some thought is not given to the presentation. - Greg Owen, who does a Magic Square routine

What magic square do you use, Greg?

I have seen one performer obtain a two-igit number on a clipboard (pre-show). He then prepares the magic square at his leisure and presents it during the performance. Saves time and adds a wrinkle.

One of the best-kept secrets is the Doug Dyment booklet "Mincsights". In it, Doug has 6-8 effects that could actually be routined together into a show.
In the manuscript, the first effect is a dynamite Magic Square routine called "FlashSquared". There is a lot of flexibility (and REPEATABILITY) in this routine in that Doug provides you with 32 different sets of numbers (templates) that can be used in making a Magic Square. In this way, you can perform at a location on a repeat basis (such as a three-show a night, one week booking) and the hired help will not see the same set of numbers repeated in any of your performances. Additionally, Doug also teaches you how you can set up a magic square to accept four-digit numbers, such as the year a person was born! This is dynamite stuff. ("Concentrate on the year you were born", etc.) This is one of my favorite magic tomes. Lots of great effects. The manuscript is a real "worker". Mike ___________________ OOPS! I typed that incorrectly. It is "Mindsights" NOT "Mincsights". Mike

Chanor, were you referring to John Stetson by any chance?
Is the Hickok's magic square similar to this one? http://members.aol.com/beagenius/magsquare.html Also be sure to check the works of Mark Farrar on the subject. Greatly recommended: http://www.buymyebook.com/buy/authorinfo.asp?id=618X810Y17 |
