The guy I saw selling "Magic Pens" was bored out of his skull and leaning on a perfectly good pitch table, complete with a ledge at the back for ditching things. I didn't have the heart to wake him to talk about it, and he's not really the decision maker anyway. I'll probably have to go to Mall management and see who leases the booth and approach them directly.
Let us know how it goes. How's the rest of the Sunnyvale/San Jose street scene? I'm stuck in Las Vegas and even though they don't legally own the sidewalks, the Casinos really don't like anyone "impeding traffic."

I see. Well, the rest of this scene, I wouldn't really know. There are street preformers in San Francisco, of course. But as for here, I don't see many street performers. Right now though, I am working on a table with my friend.
Here's the deal. He found a backgammon set at the local charity shop, about four miles each way from his house. (I mention this because we were riding bikes...ugh.) He showed it to me and it looked like a smaller breifcase. He opened it up, and showed me the inside. It was perfect for holding all sorts of props, and since it folds all the way over, the back is completely flat. We are going to put some felt on it, and presto! Houston, we have a table! As for the legs, We are going to Orchard Supply to get some legs, we are going to hinge them, so when folded, they will fit in our backpacks. Anyway, I will most likely go out this weekend, so, we will see how it goes. |

There was this guy in Cincinatti...Tom Frank told me this story...and he was a juggler...and he was street performing and not making ****!...nothing....so after a week of failure he went into Frank's magic shop there nad told him he was struggling...Tom said listen, buy this dvd (art of 1) and if you don't double what you make first day out after watching it he would refund the money...the guy comes back a week later flashing cash and telling him how good this dvd was...how much it helped...get this dvd before the Gazzo stuff...watch it study it...and then go to work...you will be able to afford all of the Gazzo stuff...trust me.

Tedb, maybe you should sell him one on a deferred payment plan? If it's as good as you say, splitting the take should more than pay for it.
(actually, I do know it's good. I have all three, plus "Lord and Master of the Rings" plus all the Gazzo stuff)

Art of 1 is a very good dvd. Lots of good tips.
Combine that DVD with threads here and you've got some great ideas. That DVD really makes you feel like you can do it. Plus there's a complete act right there on the DVD to watch and learn from. I have learned a TON from Sunny Holiday's little act. Some of his best stuff. I can really relate to that act for some reason. Don't know why but I like it a lot.

I think the great part about Sunny Holiday’s act is that it “DEMOSTRATES” everything that is being taught on the DVD and he makes it “look obtainable” so you know that you can do it too. I am still saving up for parts 2 & 3 but will have them soon. kOnO PS: Be sure and check out Danny Hustle’s site for some great advice on this same subject.

You can buy part 1 at the magic shop. Good investment. I promise. As for those who are holding off on part 2 and 3, hurry up. I'm broke.

Yeah I had the same experience. I was thinking more of a fun type place like great America or a upbeat and exiting kind of place that is crawling with happy people.

I have done street performing before and they do not usually come to someone with a deck of cards and a coin. Usually when they see the coin they think, "God don't make that appear out of my ear!" If you can start by juggling. this usually brings them in for a start then go into magic and then coin magic is great!

Zman1234,
I started out with Cellini's "Magic That Can Be Performed Anywhere" and then bought the "Art of Street Performing," 1, 2, and 3 and finally Cellini's "Lord and Master of the Rings." All are very good and all are different and with very little overlap. A of SP vol 1 teaches you how to draw and hold a crowd, vol 2 emphasizes some great and practical street magic (and teaches you this magic) and vol 3 is more philosophical in approach and emphasizes a lot of practical advice given one-on-one by Cellini, Gazzo, Luck, Danny Hustle and many other prominient street magicians. The "Lord and Master of the Rings" teaches you Cellin's handling of the dye tube and the square circle. No really, it teaches you his moves with the linking rings and the moves are masterfully performed. The "Magic That Can Be Performed Anywhere" is a great DVD and is very very valuable. The magic is "basic" and is visual and is PRACTICAL and is screaming to be performed on the street. I had some very very experienced magicians watching this DVD with me and they all stopped talking and picked their jaws up off of the table when they saw the "Coins in Handkerchief" effect. Talk about a moment of silence!! Hock your car or your girlfriend and buy these DVDs. These are a crash course in street performing and should be required viewing (AND LEARNING) by anyone who has an inkling to go out on the street. If you follow the advice and tips that has been so lovingly and unselfishly given on these videos, you will shorten your learning curve by 2-3 years and, who knows, you might even learn to survive out there relying only on your wits and your skill and your nerve. Best of luck. Mike P.S. Koz advises that vol 4 is in the works. I'm not at liberty to advise what Koz is thinking about for that volume but maybe he can be prevailed upon to give a few hints in that regard. Knowing your desire for the audience to "show me the money," this volume 4 will be of great interest to all street performers.

Well we haven't started it but we are going to in the spring. I'm waiting to sell some more of part 2 and 3. Come on guys, buy these DVD's...and yes it will be the most important of the first street performing DVD's.
