Hi,this is only my second post so be gentle.
I don t perform street but, when I was about 7 or 8(I am 14) my dad and I saw a street magician in central park near the pond. He some cigarrette stuff and other stuff. Then he did a cups and balls routine ending with a lemon final load in one cup (standard cup load) but then in the other cup he procduced an orange which was too large to fit in the cup. For the last load he produced a soft ball.I know it was solid because he slammed it on the mouth of the cup to prove it could not fit in there. Maybe some New York natives know who he is. He was wearing a short sleeve short and a pouch around his waste. He was an old timer about 55-65 years old. I am prepared to buy every book ever written on the cups and balls. But before I do, maybe you guys wanna safe me some money and tell which book it can be found in. Does anybody know how he did it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is pretty much the standard routine for C and B.
If you want a great video performed by an absolute Master - I'd look at M. Ammar. The man makes C and B look like total art work. You can't go wrong. |

Hi there,
Paul Gertner employs this same idea in his cups and balls routine, although he performs it with metal cups and steel ball bearings (using sound as a convincer) He produces large ball bearings at the end, and then a giant one that cannot fit in the cup. This technique (if you can call it that, it really just extends from supreme misdirection) is explained in his book, "Steel and Silver." It's an expensive book, and I don't necessarily encourage you to get that one right now, but I agree with David Kenney--get Michael Ammar's book, or videos on the subject, and you cannot go wrong. I know that Jeff Sheridan was once legendary in Central Park, but I have no idea where he is these days. Cordially, Ron |

Hello,
A legendary street performer who has a good cups and balls routine in book form is Gazzo. Check out his book Gazzo on the Cups and Balls, published by the school of scoundrels (www.schoolofscoundrels.com). May be something you will like. Later... Martin |

Hi
Regarding the final load of an object too big to fit in the cup, you'll find an interesting idea in John Mendoza's Chop Cup routine. Hope that helps. Good luck. Eric.

The following video sources are also excellent: Rafael Benatar vol.3 (just on C&B and it's great!), Charlie Frye "Eccentricks" video and the Johnny Palmer table hopping routine (not the FISM routine).

I am new to magic, but I love the cups and balls. If you are just learning the cups and balls(like me), a nice and simple routine can be found in "Mark Wilsons Complete Course of Magic." I also enjoy John Mendoza's cups and balls routine.

A good one to start with... cups and balls! As you can see there are so many sources of cups and balls that it can be confusing where to go. It's my opinion that the best to start with would Michael Ammars book and Videos. He touches on just about every subject within the C&B genre. After that then you can study what interests you most. I got Paul Gertners routine just to find out how he used sound, Dai Vernons just for the clean moves, and then created my own routine that fit me! I also believe you may be interested in Cellini's street magic video/DVD.. you can find it just about any magic shop.

If you are doing the Cup and Balls with sponge balls, you may want to check out some Goshman books. Mark Wilson's Cyclopedia of Magic has a good, standard Cup and Balls Routine in it.

The Gazzo on Cups and Balls Video is shipping now from the Schoold for Scoundrels.
I got mine (which I had preordered) yesterday (Sat Nov 9) and it is killer. Not only do you learn how to put the little ball under the cup and take it away, etc, You learn how to work the crowd, and a whole lot more. Then what would normally be his final loads for the cups are three big old oranges. But it gets better yet, they arent his final loads! Would you believe threee more oranges, and as only Gazzo can do it, a mellon also shows up from a most unlikely place! I now have Sonny Holiday, Jim Cellini, and Gazzo doing the cups and balls on Tape. And these are quite three different performers, doing threee different acts, with three different cnclusion, and they are all killer acts. Learn the basics, add in the unexpected, and finish big. The cups and balls definitely make a great street finisher! BroDavid

Man, I can't get enough of the cups and balls. I'll even post superfluous drivel (like this post) just to keep the thread alive and kickin'!
This street magic topic is a wealth of cups and balls information as well. . .get the proper material, but pepper it with the (sometimes extrememly clever) ideas culled from this forum. Ron "okay, it wasn't as superfluous as I thought" Giesecke Ron |

Okay, Ron, I'm with you. I've revised my cups and balls routine three times--so far. Maybe heading for a fourth. Time will tell. I think it's good now as is. Still want to work up the patter to present an interesting story. Two issues: does anyone use a patter where the balls and cups represent real world objects? Also, does anyone do the Vernon wand vanish on the street? If so, any problems with flashing the ball from an extreme left viewpoint? Thanks.
Jim

The left is the tough angle for most cups and balls secret moves. If you design your act so that you turn to the left slightly at the moment of weakness it helps considerably. I don't do the Vernon wand vanish on the street only because it can be a problem in strong wind with the balls I use, because of the brief moment of weakness when doing 'the move', and because it just looks too fancy for my persona. The character I play is a bit of a bumbling pitch man. Such a guy would never use something so clever or fancy. I prefer more iron clad unfancy vanishes. They look more natural in my character's hands.

Thanks, Danny. Maybe I'll stick to the standard vanish when out of doors. I will be able to build a natural turn to the left into the routine to help cover that angle. Thanks for the tip.
Your character sounds interesting and funny. Did you go through other characters to arrive at this one? How do you dress for this character? Jim

You know it's funny. It is just a blown up version of who I am in real life. My first jobs were as a talker for the Gyp shacks at Salisbury Beach, here in Massachusetts. I was the guy who would guess your weight, help you tip over the milk bottles, and spin the wheel of fortune (There is a winner every time!).
My Dad was also a second act singer/comic in the waning days of vaudeville and cabaret. He and his friends were a great source of inspiration, character development, and material, when I was thinking about putting my act together. I do three or four bits and jokes in my show that I got directly from those guys. I dress in my grandfather’s old soft hat, a brown corduroy plaid vest, a pouch Gazzo gave me, jeans, T- shirt, and Doc Martean’s. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Jim,
I do the Vernon wand spin almost always--since I mastered it, it is one of those things that makes the jaw drop. Lance Burton performed it beautifully on his television special, where he used coffee cups, and ended with two lemons and a mouse. I love the way he did that, and his wand spin vanish was just flawless! |

Sorry I haven't had time to post in this thread and thank everyone for all their help.
I look foward to taking a look at John Mendoza's chop cup routine. The only reason that I have not yet looked at Paul Gertner's routine was because I thought his triple sized load technique could only be done while seated. Is this true or was I mistaken. I already have Ammar's and Gazzo's stuff and agree that it is good, but I was a little disappointed that Gazzo doesn't actually produce the melon from within the cups. Once again, thanks for all your help.

Danny,
That's so cool that you have this multi-generational thing going with your father and performing. And that those old lines still work today. Like the outfit you described. Has your dad seen your street show and what does he say? Ron, regarding the wand vanish, glad to hear you like it too. I've only performed it twice in public, and it's worked so I guess I'm ready to start using it. But, as Danny mentioned, I'm not sure I would take it on the street for fear of wind problems. What do you think about possible wind problems? Better open my windows next time I'm practicing. Jim PS: What are you guys using for final loads? I'm using Racquetball balls.

That's a funny comment, either he'd have to use real big cups or a real small melon. |

Hmmm, not really. He could just have some excellent misdirection and handling.
But interestingly enough, after his routine is over, what the people remember is cups and balls and a melon. The hat just seems to be forgotten. And although it would be really cool to have it happen that way, and see the "melon come from the cup", and I admit that I too would love to see the handling of it, it isn't necessary for his act. I am working on producing a regulation softball which is clearly about twice the size of my cups, and now that my table is almost complete, I think I will have it. And it will come right out of one of the cups......(ok, it will appear to come out of one of the cups...) So I beleive that someone like Gazzo probably could "produce the melon from a cup," if he needed to do it. But he doesn't need to do it. He has the hat, and the effect is pretty darn strong as it is. But think about. How would you go about it? And then, work on it. BroDavid
