Would Andrew Mayne's specter cabinet
work to produce santa at the end of a Christmas show? What else works? |

David Copperfiels trick with the paper panels is very easy to do. I'm not sure of the name. You have four wooden panel cvered in white paper, The panels are assembled, a light is positioned in the top and all other lights are turned off. Santa then poked his finger through, and then tears his way though the paper.
Make it look like a large Christmas present. |

I think we've discussed Santas arrival before.
Are you supplying the Santa, or are you hoping the old guy who's been stitched to be santa, who's been drinking in another room during the show, will for once be able to follow your instructions and do his part right. If you're supplying the Santa, then his arrival can be rehearsed and yes that illusion would be a great way to introduce him, Scuffy. However there are 2 distict types of Santa, 1, The volunteer who does it because he loves making the kids happy etc. They are normally very good and make up for a lack of acting ability with lots of enthusiasm. 2, The stitched up guy I mentioned above, These can range from quite good to downright terrible. The problem I've found in the past is no matter how much you prep them beforehand, they often fail to enter at the correct time. At best they are a bit late and the kids have to sing jingle bells (so he can find them) or say the magic word 2-3 times before he shows his face. At worse He plays with the bell in the corridor, and the kids hear him and start looking for him, he strolls in the room or peaks round the door (in costume to see whats happening) he's too early and a kid sees him and you've lost them straight away. I give the santa, or organiser good simple instructions, I tell them when he needs to come in and what his que is, I tell them what preceeds his entry so he can be ready on time, at least 10% of them will get it wrong.
Yours Funfully

Here's a funny Santa production story --
I produced Santa from a "Magic Chimney" of Paul Osborne design. Basically, it's a big BA box . Santa has to sit or kneel inside until it's time to stand up and make his appearance. This was at a large shopping mall with lots and lots of people ... You guessed it! Santa ripped his pants while standing up, and had to walk the entire length of the mall to his throne, with dozens of kids surrounding him, the whole time with one hand covering his flank! Ha-ha! |
