For those who don't know about it or haven't taken the time to read it, this is a MUST READ!
It is not only for a beginning cardician but for experienced as well. I saw on another thread where a poster admitted that he had not taken the time to learn the "Elmsley Count". That is not only a basic move, but an ESSENTIAL move for any cardician to master. This book not only covers the Elmsley Count, but the Hamman, Spirit, Smile, and Jordan counts among others. It may be a turn off to some because it does not explain a single trick or effect. But the knowledge one gains from reading it is worth it's weight in gold. Everything taught in the book can be applied in some way, shape, or form to modern day card effects. If you haven't read it because you didn't know about it or just didn't take the time I recommend you stop what your doing and locate a copy. It's about 73 to 76 pages long and full of clear photographs from the performers perspective. The best part is that it can be found for between $8 to $15 depending on where you look. So, check it out, you won't be disappointed. |

I agree this is one of the best investments I had ever made. When I was new at magic an old dealer hight reccomended this book and I looked at it and wondered its not very impressive from the cover but between the covers is pure gold..With this book and The Royal Road To Card Magic I was set to learn all I evet needed about card magic.

This really, really is a great read. It's one of the first books that I started with. I can remember when I fist got it and would buy a trick that called for a specifiy count, but didn't teach it. I'd always go to the book to look it up.

I purchased this booklet in 1981, and while I spent many wonderful hours reading and learning from the book, it is not the best book to learn these moves from.
One of my key objections to this booklet is that the descriptions are horribly outdated. For instance, if you read the descriptions for the Elmsley count and Jordon counts, the counts are performed "at the fingertips" (like the Vernon description in Inner Secrets of Magic). I realize that Jerry's book was published in 1977, but I cannot remember seeing a professional magician perform an "at the fingertips" count for the last 20 years ... everyone performs the Elmsley and Jordon counts in the mechanics grip. If you want a book that details more up-to-date methods, I would suggest the Giobbi Card College series. I realize that you are paying a lot more money, but you are also getting a lot more for your money ... just my opinion.

If you do magic one on one as I mostly do I usually hand the spectator the deck first just to see how he or she handles them and try to make my "style" fit that. I only do a few tricks but I learned several counts out of it. His desctiptions are clear and it made it easy to learn. There was a discussion about this book on MAGIC! BBS many years ago and I learned about it there. Great book. Get it, you won't be sorry and you can modernize the look easily. -=tabman

Since Jerry's books have been around for such a long time and since many of them are considered classics, I just assumed that Jerry was an old-time magician of the '50s or '60s and was probably dead and gone. How stupid is that!!?? I've really got to start getting out of my room more often. (grin) Thanks again for the info and the URL. Mike

Now all you have to do is get a copy of Emerson & West's "Tricks You Can Count On" which deals (pun intended) exclusively with Elmsley count (ghost count, or 4-as-4 count) routines). Some excellent material in that oft overlooked little tome.
