I've been told that "One" can't really be performed surrounded like he supposedly did on his TV Special. That was a letdown although I'm quite sure there is a way to really do it surrounded..... Wouldn't have the budget right now though, "sigh".....

We are in the process of building a version of One but with a huge twist. It should be ready to go to the builder in Spring of 2003. And before you jump and talk about rights, yes I have spent some time with the creator (those of you who know who it is, if you don't it doesn't really matter) he liked my idea on it and gave me the rights to build it and perform it. I'll keep you posted as to how it turns out.

The effect ONE was created by Andre Kole.

The opening effct for the tornado of fire special cannot be done live. It was made for TV that is why he performs the Shadow box, etc. This is my opinion but I have studied long enough to know that THAT illusion is great only for TV. as is with many DC illusions

The opening illusion on T.O.F. can be done live...I have seen him do it. Not surrounded like in the special, but still the same illusion.

ONE is a very impressive and I think almost poetic illusion. It really is the cream of the crop type of illusion. I've been trying to figure out how to do it and I think I've kind of caught on to the method... sadly, I can't be sure because I only saw the illusion performed once on TV and haven't seen it since so all I have to work from is memory.
Anyways, Its sad that Copperfield doesn't open his show with this everynight... but it is understandable. I don't think, tho, that the TEST CONDITIONS is that good compared to ONE. ONE is unique... like most of Kole's stuff. Dorian Grey
What you have seen this evening was real, though it may have nothing to do with reality.

I'm not so sure if Copperfield would make Ammar sit out...he did, after all, write the introduction for Michael Ammar's book..

In answer to the original post and the fact that a motorcycle was later mentioned, then yes it was definitely his shadow box illusion - So, research "Shadow Box" and as it is as old as the hills, there is a lot of info out there, with many different designs. (In fact I'm working on a new idea for shadow box at the moment)
I think that I have "The One" worked out, but not too sure it's right. (If not, then I have worked out a new way of doing it!) As for not letting known magicians partake in 13 is I think that's all hype to make it sound revolutionary to the audience. - Are there any magicians that don't know how it's done or at least the basic principle? Test Conditions: It's OK and all very clever, but ultimately I found it a bit boring to be honest. To the audience, all it is is; box on stage, waste time, wow DC appears in box - No Copperfield story as to why he is appearing so just a clever bit. Chris.

ONE is done differently in the T.O.F. special, without tipping the method NOT only do people behind at at the sides see it but also people in front were in on it... this is because (hint) the camera has a limited latitude than the peripheral vision of the human eye...
He did it LIVE for a time, but the one on TV looks more magical No camera cuts or special effets... just clever timing.
I would, however contest that there is in REALITY very little pportunity to perform what could actually be termed "close-up" magic.
