I saw someone construct a square based pyramid from two wooden blocks a while ago-he then gave me the blocks to recreate what he did,and could I?.......no!He did eventually show me!
Has anyone heard of this before? It has been at the back of my mind for years! Incidentally he also showed me a pen twisting puzzle which I use all the time now!the pen starts between praying hands in the crotch of the thumb! Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks |

I think I know the puzzle you have in mind. When assembled it is a regular tetrahedron -- a four-sided figure, each side of which is a regular triangle. The puzzle consists of 2 identical pieces, each with 5 sides; one side of each is a square. It is amazingly difficult to find the way to put them together to make the tetrahedron. This was a novelty puzzle when I was young. I think that I had one manufactured by the Adams Co., so they still may be made. I found a picture of a wooden version at this site:

Go to:

If you have a sadistic sense of humor, you might find it amusing to take a tip from Mel Stover. Add a third piece.
Assemble the pyramid so onlookers think you're using all three pieces. Actually, you use only two of them (the extra is taken into fingerpalm). As you knock the pyramid apart, secretly add the palmed piece. At this point, you can invite someone to take the pieces and try their hand at solving the puzzle. |

Oh! I do like the sound of the "three piece" puzzle!I'm on a mission now!
Still got half a mind to make it from wood! This is one I'm going to try! |
