I got this DVD and viewed some time ago. This is my review for it.
First of all, all credit has been given. All the magicians concerned have been mentioned. This DVD is a collection of sleights, subtleties and effects performed and taught by Simon Lovell. Everything is within reach of the average/intermediate performer and the beginner, with some practice should be able to master anything in this DVD. I liked some of the subtleties regarding the double lift. One of them allows you to throw a double from one hand to the other. The other allows you to spin it on top of the deck while keeping it completely squared. I also enjoyed some of the ideas about the Ambitious Card routine, particularly the very deceptive sequence with a d***** b*****. The effect I liked most from the DVD was a version of the Do As I Do effect with two added climaxes. The quality of the DVD is great and Simon goes into great detail as to how to accomplish the various sleights and effects. I recommend this DVD and give it 8 out of 10. But I have to say that personally I enjoyed more the Madness Behind the Methods set. The latter is loaded with great routines by Simon Lovell. I also recommend them to anyone serious in Close-Up magic.

Niva,
Only an 8 out of 10? I would rate it much higher. |

I have this DVD too, and I thought that this DVD was better than the Methods behind the Madness set.
The reason is because in the madness set, Simon rabbles too much and there are times when a trick should be only 3 minutes long are made into 10 minutes with a lot of sidetracking and dry comedy. On this set, Simon only emphasizes the trick involved and doesn't get sidetracked. |

I just got it last night. Did not make it through all the DVD but it looks pretty good. It appears to have been shot at the same time as the Methods dvd. I must say this is the first time I have seen him and IMO he ranks up there with Bill Malone. He is now on my top 5 list! Good magic, easy to do, his main focus is on presentation.

Well, I was very disappointed with it. Yes, it teaches some nice touches (I loves the tips on the painbtbrush change in the "ambitious card moves section") but the moves and ideas taught are quite known (at least, to me).
I have to admit that I didn't take a lot of information about what I would find in the DVD. I heard "Simon Lovell", and I rushed in order to discover what crazy ideas and/or sleights-of-hands would be there... So, I would say: if you know a lot about magic, you are probably about to be disappointed by this one as you'll see a lot of old things. But if you're quite new in card magic, you'll have difficulties to find a better teacher to show you all those techniques. But, in MY opinion and in MY case, I would give 6/10.(and all the 6 points go for the subtelty on the paintbrush change) Jonathan. |

I must disagree with Jonathan. I rather enjoyed the DVD and this, along with method, are in my top 3 DVD's. I enjoy the way Lovel teaches not only the effect but the angels, Handlings etc... A 9/10 in my book.
