Thanks tabman! I'll add a link to yours as well.
I have to admit, I've been ooh'ing and aah'ing at your site as well.... (when I should have been working). I've heard excellent things from AJP recently. Frank

Oh, I bet those white dice look good stacked! I've been using some red cancelled dice for better than a decade. I've got a nice large white die that I use for a final load when I'm feeling ambitious but having the white dice would be a real plus! I've got to get some. Great idea Frank!

I have today received my "Art of Dice Stacking" by Jim Zachary and also "How to Stack Dice for Fun & No $" by Senator Crandall.
By far the best method is Jim Zachary. I have picked up the loading of the dice very simply, but the actual stacking is proving a problem. The Senator Crandall booklet is badly laid out and its method is not clearly explained. From what I can gather, I have tried the explained method and found this much harder than Zachary's method. I would advise anyone looking to start dice stacking to pick up Jim Zachary and use his method. Chris Posted: Nov 16, 2004 1:13pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just can't get these dice to stand on top of each other!!! Argh! I have tried both methods (Crandall and Zachary) and I can't get it! Can anyone help me? Cheers, Chris |

To start with, just get the pickup motion correctly and after you have all the dice picked up, swing a few more times and then look into the cup.
Are they all in alignment? If so that's a good thing. If not, you need to work on that part some more. The dice should stay along the wall in the cup just like clothes in a dryer. The hardest part is when the cup needs to come to rest; however, it's not too difficult at all and... as you pick up all the dice and do the last final swings, slowly bring the cup to vertical as you're swinging back and forth. Sometimes the last swing (for me) is done with the cup completely vertical and the entire mouth is flat on the surface.

They aren't in alignment. How do I "work on that part"?

Think about your arm as a pendulum coming to rest or stopping a tractor trailer or a bus full of elderly people. The move puts them lined up along the wall, the rest is in how you stop the motion smoothly. Also when you stop, back the cup up a half inch or so to put the dice more in the center of the cup so you don't inadvertantly knock 'em over when you lift the cup.
Sorry you didn't like the Crandall book. I love it for the history. it's a little booklet that he wrote and sold for two bucks for walking money. If you don't think it's worth four bucks send it to me and I will buy it from you. -=tabman

Get a clear plastic drinking glass about the size of the dice cup. It can be SLIGHTLY conical... but then you can see inside as you practice.
Coming to a fast stop takes a little work.

So you are saying I should try to stop the cup slowly? This is my problem at the moment, you see. I have the stacking inside the cup; it's just getting them to stop and lift the cup to see them there all stacked: but no luck, and by the way I am not knocking them over.
Chris By the way, cheers everyone! Posted: Nov 17, 2004 10:30am -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tabman, I won't take you up on your offer because I am in the UK and it cost me $8 in total to buy, which is quite expensive. I understand that you would be able to get it cheaper elsewhere. Chris |

NO, not slowly. It is hard to describe, but a quick, abrupt stop. Then I gently move the cup just a tiny bit away from dice so when I lift cup it doesn't knock 'em over.
If you get the clear glass it will really help you learn. I don't know if any of the books suggest this. Also, try to get Pat Page at the Magic Circle to help you.

Pete: As I was saying to Frank Starsini, I have already tried the clear glass and can't figure out the stopping bit. Cheers anyway,

I think Pete Biro said at one point that it's like keeping water inside a bucket while you swing it over your head. That's what the wrist is doing aiming it left and right while the arm is moving left and right.
Hang onto that Crandall booklet and at some point pull it out again after you've got the stacking down and revisit the Senator then. Just a swingin' -=tabman

I will try these. Also, tabman, I understand that it is centrifugal force that holds the dice inside the cup. Cheers everyone all the same,

Pat Page hangs at the Magic Circle on Monday nights. You might try "Directory Inquiries" and phone him. He lives on Lomond Grove in London.
Posted: Nov 18, 2004 1:20pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As you move the cup back and forth, in an arc, the top rotates at a slight angle... you can hear them and should know when they are stacked. I then bring it to the stop and no noise means you got it. You need to find out which way, right or left, is best. After awhile you get so you can stop at either side. I like to place four dice in a row a couple of inches apart, parallel to my body... and with ONE SCOOP to the right and back to left, stopping, and have 'em stacked. This even kills most guys that stack as they can't do it. I can also place all four dice in a square, touching and do it with one stroke.

Don't stop, I've been working with the dice cup that I got from Frank (killer cup!) and it's taken me a while, but I can stack 4 about 90%+ of the time, took me about a week to get the correct angle of the wrist and rocking motion down. The thing that helped me was to keep a cadence in my head so that I developed a rhythm, this seemed to help me keep the dice stacked. I also only practiced only 20 minutes or so at a time. Any more and I started to get frustrated. Doing it 2-3 times a day for 20 minutes or so helps muscle memory far better than doing a marathon session. Keep it up, it'll come to you!

When you stop the cup stop on the left hand side. it sounds stupid but try it. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! I've been stacking dice for over twenty years since I first saw it done by Don Alan. Interestingly, he could stack them on his close-up pad which was, I believe, made from a slab of foam rubber covered with billiard table felt. It was probably John Mendoza who pointed me to the Senator Crandall booklet, a reference that was quite helpful.
It didn't take me very long to get the basic idea and make them stand up. It reminded me of learning to juggle. First it seems like it just isn't working. Then rather suddenly, it just happens... it works. And from that point on it feels quite natural. Developing smoothness, confidence, and consistency of course will come from continued practice. Regarding the move for the final swing and the dead stop, I've taught several people how to stack over the years, and had good success with this advise: Make one more swing of the cup after picking up the last die. Keep the mouth of the cup against the table and slide it back and forth one full move in the same rhythm as picking up the dice. That necessary sharp dead stop seems to be under more control if it isn't on the same stroke as the last pick-up. Try it. Of course your mileage may vary. Greg |
