Wooden or paper? I'd guess wooden, but it's best to check these things out!

I was originally thinking wooden matches, but I don't suppose it matters much. But as wooden matches are the most common to buy (at least in UK), they wood be ideal, tom

Stick(wooden)matches can be lit one handed in a few ways that I know of. First they must be "strike anywhere" matches. Not all stick matches are "strike anywhere". Look for the two tone match head. Back in the day, I would light them with my finger nail (press firmly with the thumbnail right at the tip of the match, right where the two colors come together and "flick" firmly. The motion is similar to flipping a coin with your thumb) They can also be lit off of your pant leg, or the sole of your shoe. You could also affix a small piece of the striking area on your body and light them just about anywhere on your body. They can also be ignited by throwing them on the ground(concrete or asphalt) if you get the angle right. Book matches can be lit with one hand as well. Its just a matter of practicing. Open the cover, bend a match down(do not tear out) bend it around to the backside with your thumb. Lay the match across the striking area, lay your thumb flat on top of that and strike with a snapping motion of the fingers. Its easier than it sounds.
Vandy Oh yeah, I've also seen them lit off of a tooth. Gotta have dry teeth though...

Yeah, and be careful! It's possible to have a piece of the match head stick to your finger (or thumb, or tongue) and leave you with a nasty blister. Remember: Close cover before striking! ; ) Good Luck...

There's a nice manner but require some juggling style:
put some weight in the match box, throw it in the air and rub the match against it (covering the box with the "lightning paper" also helps... To recover the box, tap it with your feet (as in haky sack) and catch it with the other hand... plays big when done properly... But it's just juggling though...

Do you mean like making a lit match appear from your pocket?

To take out a lit matche, just put some heavy elastic band around the box and a few matches on the side. ( a paper clip works well also.)
Stick some matcjes between, on pulling them rather fast, they will light.

I can strike a safety match on the side of a box one-handed. It works like this. Push the drawer out with your ring finger, extract a match with your thumb and index finger, squeeze the drawer closed. Now here's the tough part.
Hold the matchbox between the ring and little fingers on one end, and the heel of your hand on the other. Hold the match by the bare end, between the index and thumb. Rest the head of the match on the end of the striking surface, near the heel of the hand. Use the middle finger to flick the match along the striker. The match will light. Do it fast, and get it out of the way of the box or you administer laxative heat unto yourself. Not responsible for damage you do to yourself trying out this dernfool idea.

Jeff McBride explains his match production in his early lecture notes and, I beleve, on one of his tapes. He used the match book variety.
He used the explaination as a point in his lecture on creating a magic atmosphere. You most likely know the method already, as many ordinary people use this method. It is basicly opening the cover and bending the match over to the striking surface and stricking the match all with one hand. |
