I just bought the complete catalogue of Ted Annemann's "The Jinx". That's 800 pages and a lot of tricks and reading, puh! Phil Goldstein claims this has been one of his most important sources for inspiration. Can someone recommend any good mental effect from "The Jinx"

Hi Stig,
First my congrats. Jinx is fantastic choice. But IMHO its very hard to recommend one specific effect our routine. Because a real good effect or routine should fit to your performing style. Generally speaking all of Annemann's work is inspiring. I'd suggest you either choose a topic of your interest and look for good effects or better yet take time and dig through the works. Becaue when reading effects and tips its up to you to imagine the described effect in your mind and so you at your best can judge the impact it has for your performance. By the way. As with all other books. Every time I reread a book or look for something specific I every time find an effect interesting for me that I woudln't have chosen for my program maybe a year ago. I discovered that every item in the works can have inspiring material for you. Even if an effect doesn't fit your style there may be some techniques or advices given that can help you on other effects you perform. There is so much valuable stuff in this works. Really, take some time and begin to study it and soon you'll discover how this works can serve you best. Have fun with this good luck Thomas Rudolfo |

Hmmmm, A Few of my favorites in the Jinx so far (I just skip through every now and then):
Psuedo Psychometry By Ted Annemann (Issue 9) Miraskill by Stewart James (Issue 24) The Phantom Artist (1937 Summer Extra) Gum At Large By Jack Varsbrough (Issue 120) Further Than That By Stewart James (Issue 134) Those are all that come to my mind at the moment
Thanks! Scott B.

If you don't find it pleasurable to allow your mind to slowly percolate through page after page of some of the finest magical thinking of the 20th century, to get to know some of the sharpest minds of the time, to immerse yourself in a golden age of magical experimentation and to discover gems that most of your peers have overlooked (and others that they may have bought as "new" from their local magic dealer), ask yourself: what kind of magician are you -- and what kind do you hope to be?
Magic is a craft that requires dedication and study. So forget about shortcuts and read it all. Slowly. And enjoy. Best, Neil

Stig,
Neil is quite right, you will get the most out of the Jinx by reading and absorbing it. Several times a year I will pick out one of the volumes and just start going through it, reading numerous articles and effects that catch my interest. It is amazing that even the third and fourth time through this material, you will still get something new out of it. But you have to go through all of it first. One of my favorites, something I still use to fool magicians, is a tweak of mine on one of the versions of Lie Detector that Ted explains in the first few issues. Have fun! Brady |

Necromancer,
Of course my intention is to read through the whole works! I wouldn't buy the entire collection just to read about a few tricks that other magicians recommend! Obviously it will take a lot of time to come through it, but it will be a good time! As I'm quite new to the mental side of magic I'm curious about the mental effects in The Jinx and which effects other readers have appreciated. I've been looking for The Jinx for years. I finally found it on eBay. I'm looking forward to explore all the issues and add some nice effects to my repertiore or at least widen my magic horizon. Cheers, Stig |
