I'm considering buying "Servais LeRoy -- Monarch of Mystery" by Mike Caveney and William Rauscher, and would like to hear from those who have read this biography. See http://www.mcmagicwords.com/books/servaisleroy.html
I know Mike generally does a first-class job, and I'm hoping this is no exception. Does he provide any new information on LeRoy? Any new insights on his work and inventions? The basic facts of LeRoy's career are fairly well known; what I was hoping for was some original research that provided new information, or an original analysis of the existing material that's available. So let me know what you think. Is the book well written? Are the photos and drawings reproduced well? I'm hoping to hear from you. SETH

It is a wonderful book. I thought I knew basic information about LeRoy and considered him one of my magic heros, but there was considerable new stuff to me. Also much info was obtained from William Rauscher based on his friendship with Elizabeth Ford, Leroy's sister-in-law, and thus providing much personal information that makes it a very touching, and ultimately heartbreaking, story. ANd stuff that just plain makes me mad.
There are beautiful color reproductions of many posters, and all sorts of interesting photos. Nowlin Craver

Thanks for the information, it's much appreciated.
Since the book is fairly expensive, I wanted to hear from others before buying it. Once again, I'm glad to hear that the book uses primary source material rather than rehashed material that's already been published. Thanks! SETH

If you enjoy the history of our art, this book is a must have.
It is beautifully written and illustrated, telling us of one of magic's great inventors and innovators. Finally is describes the saddest and most pathetic ending of a magnificant career in all of magic. Highly recommended. Ted (Leondo) |

I knew that LeRoy came to a bad end, based on some information in David Price's "Magic -- A Pictorial History."
Now I guess I'll have to buy and read the book to learn the rest. SETH
