I am in the process of putting together a (for want of a better expression) comparative analysis of three ball routines. I have most of the well known routines, but I need some help filling in some of the gaps. Specifically, I want to know the details of the various phases of the routine. For example, the list might be
- Balls produced one by one - Three balls go in left hand. Reappear in right (2) - Two in the hand, one in the pocket (3) - Balls vanish The number in parenthesis represents the number of times that phase is repeated. Note, I do not want to know any details of the handling; I just want to know what the audience would see. So far, the three ball routines that I have are: John Scarne, Danny Archer, Mike Gallo, Dai Vernon, Doc Daley, Charlie Miller, John Luka, David Roth and Steve Draun. (I'll update this list as I get more info) Thanks Bye for now Harold

Johnny Thompson also has one. It may be similar to the Vernon or Silent Mora version.

Harold,
Danny Archer has a manuscript on a three ball routine. I also think Bob Sheets has some work on it too. Johnny Thompson's work is on the classic Silent Mora version. Enjoy the search. Regards, Paul Green |

These routines do not have a lot of spectator involvement so some careful thought needs to be put into...
how, when, and why they are performed. If you plan on doing one for real people, spend some time thinking this thru. Some use a handkerchief as an impromptu table with spectators holding the corners. This is a good start! If you're just learning one to learn it, avoid my post like the plague.

There is a version in The Miracle Makers by J G Thompson. Has a tweaked little fairy tale story that goes with it.

First off, thanks for all the replies!
Tom G: I'll chase up the Johnny Thompson routine. I'm pretty sure it's on one of his tapes. Paul: Yes, I have Danny's routine (he actually has a couple of ball routines)... I'll chase up Bob Sheets about his work. That reference is new to me. Frank: I actually already perform a three ball routine (and I have been doing it for about ten years). However, I am revisiting the subject. Michael: I'll look up Miracle Makers reference, but I seem to remember that that was more a two in the hand, one in the pocket routine. To "qualify" for a three ball routine, the balls have to travel from one hand to the other.

Harold,
Balthazar Fuentes has a three ball routine in his lecture notes High Five Magic which is very good. |

HA...and to think, I thought all you needed was a trick using 3 balls to qualify as a 3 ball routine ! Also, don't forget the Scarne routine from the Stars Of Magic...and John Benzais had a nice routine in the Best Of Benzais. And then John Cornelius had a kick butt 3 ball trick on one of his videos as well! Mike |

I thought you wanted variations. Doesn't Rene Lavand have a 3-Ball-like routine... pellets or something? It's been a long time...

I believe that John Ramsay also has something of interest that was on the Andrew Galloway video.
I liked it whatever it was.

Don't forget Frank Garcia's "The Real Secrets of the three Ball Routines" featuring Franks "3 ball miracle"
Romaine's "Perplexing Persian Pearls" Doc Daley's "Chromo Spheres" and more. Also I believe John Luka in his book L.I.N.T. has his take on Daley's "Chromo Spheres". Hope this helps, Joe

Frank, if that was the tape the Galloway put out doing the Ramsay stuff with no explanations...well that was not Ramsay's trick with the balls then. It was basically the Scarne routine from the Stars Of Magic. Andrew was using that to demonstrate the power of misdirection! Mike |

Yes, I know, Mike (Gallo) [and others], that all you need for a "three ball routine" is three balls.
I just wanted to avoid routines that were just "two in the hand, one in the pocket". As for Frank Garcia's "Real Secrets of Three Ball Routines", that is indeed a great book. It was my second exposure to the subject (Stars of Magic being my first), and I fell in love with Doc Daley's idea of using three different colored balls. I know Mike Gallo (and others) feel that this is ovekill (ie, the three balls go from one hand to the other; that's enough), but I like the idea.

Nope, never said overkill...matter of fact I have a version I do for magicians all the time. If anything I ever said was...it is easier to follow, more direct to use the same color balls when performing for laymen! Mike |

I think a color change is ok if it actually looks like a color change.. meaning you SEE a ball magically change color.
If it just ends up being a different color when you open your hand, that just reeks of "extra ball" and should be avoided.

Rene Lavand's routine is done with bread crumbs, but could easily be adapted to balls of some sort.

Harold,
You might want to get in touch with Reed McClintock. He's got a routine that I thnk you'll find interesting. Three balls, one a different color, and a little larger than the others. Some very odd moments, most make you think either "What the?" or "I could use that". Some parts remind me of "Two Copper, One Silver" but with Balls.
