As far as I can tell, the really neat thing was coming up with an appropriate puzzle.
The effect would of course work with any puzzle, but from a theatrical point of view the Mona Lisa (with her famous smile missing!) appears to be a perfect solution. So the argument might as well be about who thought of using the Mona Lisa. -Mahlstrom |

Steve:
Are you confusing method with effect? What makes it a great effect is the same thing that makes ANY effect great---the PRESENTATION. Ask Bob Dorian, who originated this effect & has been doing it since the 80s with a map of the US. (I have a tape of him doing it on the old Merv Griffin show.) This is dealt with on another thread. |

Paradox-
I agree with you. The effect Bob Dorian did, however, was originated by the English mentalist, Romark. Dorian obtained the rights to this effect, and his other routines, after Romark's death. There is absolutely no difference between Mona Lisa and the Romark effect except for the puzzle used. Best- Bob Cassidy |

So, if one was thinking of making this effect themselves (using a different puzzle, of course), what would be the best (cheapest) solution for aquiring all the additional pieces one would need?

There is a version similar to all this in Syzygy from a few years ago.

This effect was published by Lee Earle In SYZYGY Volume 4 Number 2 Issue #56 copywrite 1997.
It can be made for $10.00 if you live near a closeout store such as "Just a Buck".The idea is to use a simple puzzle without too much detail so that it can be seen in the cheap seats and use a see thru as opposed to an opaque apparatus.Good Luck

If you break down and buy the flicking fingers dvd and study it, a cheap alternative in which at the most you'd spend would be for 25 puzzles comes to mind. I guess the F.F. guy is the one starting the hubub though.

Thanks!
I went through my back issues of Syzygy and found the effect. I'll be running over to the two "Dollar" stores in my area and see if they actually have the number of puzzles I'm going to need for the Syzygy version. For some odd reason, I have a feeling that this is going to be a lot harder to put together than it's actually worth. It may just be cheaper to buy the Sagiv version, where he's done most of the work for you. And it will tie in nicely to the "Da Vinci Code" fad that will climax with the eventual release of the movie.

The ad says "the spectator selects a piece FREELY"
is this true? is there absolutely no force included? Update: Today I received an email from nicolai friedrich. he told me, that, because of his contract with david Copperfield, he isn't allow to bring his illusion on the market until 2009! so wait, and don't buy this stupid ripp-off!!!! greetings, andy |

I saw this the other day in a show and it does not look like a rip off. The puzzle is great. It is a lot of money but the puzzle is large and framed. It looked great on stage. If if were a rip off the magic jobbers would not be selling it.

I Can't believe that a magician called the police to arrest another magician and the Idea or the Trick IS NOT HIS!!! just a bad copy of the original. Truly incredible....

Andy, regarding the mail you received about the contract with Copperfield. Well, I own the FF dvd and saw the really very good performance of nicolai on this dvd. But as magicbyswh mentioned, the marketed versions hardly are rippoffs. That's just another example of small thinking of some performers.
But I also want to mention that I wouldn't buy this routien at this price. I am likely do perform this piece in one of my shows but then I would make it up by myself which is much more cheaper than the whole routine. If you need some infos on that just drop a PM. And as Gaston mentioned it cannot be that somebody has been arrested for performing this routine even with mona lisa as the picture (which I wouldn't choose for other reasons) since there are many other routines (like puzzled in Syzygy) which deal with this idea. Umm...to refresh our memory, the guy didn't complain that the effect/idea was stolen, but that the actual puzzle/trick itself was stolen. From his home. The idiocy, it seems to me, is in assuming that the first one he saw had to be his, even if it was on National TV. Like the marketer only made one, his.

Having bought both the Sag Levi version (on deep discount) and having the FF The movie and SYZYGY as well I can say that there is little in any of these that is unique unto themselves. Anneman may as well have had a version of his own. Something like it has been probably created a couple of dozen times.
The Sag Levi version does provide the value of a framed puzzle and quality carrying case plus other than that it can be completely asesembled by anyone for $50 and a little commonsense. Personally, I changed Sag's handling and don't know Nicolai's since the on The Movie it is performance only. I use a clear baggy forcing bag which I manufactured from the new type of ziplock with slider (keeps everything nice between shows) but feel how the forcing bag is used to be of primary importance (as is true of most things). Now Nicolai says his not available, Sag Levi has sold his and I have bought one of his in good faith, and I own SYZYGY, Anneman, and a couple of other pertinent pieces. Do I, ethically, now need to stop performing what I have acquired in good faith or is it okay if I transform a puzzle into a story about a stolen and destroyed art artifact by buying an art prints of the Mona Lisa or some other piece, using pieces of torn print to replace puzzle pieces. How far must one travel before the effect or method is sufficiently different to warrant being considered your own? I would use a Picasso but people wouldn't know if the piece was right or not. Or use a Warhol but then every piece would fit.
