Hey all,
I am purchasing a home, and have been given free reign on a room. This is an upstairs room that is going to be my magic room/office. Just wondering if anyone out there has an overly cool magic room. Pictures posted would be nice -- ideas are great, too. Lets share the spaces we love! And let me know how I can make my magic room super cool!

An upstairs room is perfect for a magic trapdoor! Then you can perform the famous upstairs to downstairs translocation trick.
There is also a thread in this section about 'magically altered houses,' that mentions some interesting ideas. |

My magic space is in my basement and that's 900 sq.ft. of space. I painted the floor black with semi-glossy paint, put black and purple cloth up for a backdrop. It looks great for video taping my performance, but people love it because it looks like a real theater (minus the ticket price).

I've thought about creating a theater enviroment. Does yours have an actual platform for the stage? I have seen this done before -- interesting look.

I have a computer, printer and fax machine. Booking more shows is all the magic I need!
I have enough magic with my work; I don't add additional magic in my daily life. |

My magic room looks like a cross between an attic in an old movie (although it's not in the attic) and a pig sty. Most of the time the full-size mirror I have set up is visible enough to practice sleights, but the three-way mirror has a huge pile of books that I have to move every time I want to check angles, and the rest of the room is flooded with props, cardboard boxes of props, plastic bags of props, books, tools...

My room has a platform that I made and my room is a whole garage, so I have seats so I can have a show for my family whenever they come over. Since it's so big, I built it so it has trap doors and little compartments.

When I had my home built I made two bedrooms into one long room.
At one end is my computer and work desk. The other end has my 10-foot Curtain up. On the sidewalls I have shelves with my effects on them. It is like walking into a magic store that has a performing area. Ray |

I have a drawer that holds all of my effects, and a HUGE bookshelf stacked with books, videos and DVDs. I don't have a lot of "props" due to I like to use regular everyday items for my magic.
I hope to expand my collection by acquiring props someday, but alas, it sucks to be broke! Phil

Ah yes a Magic Room! When we purchased our 4 bedroom house I quickly claimed one room as my magic room. It has a full length mirror for practicing. I placed what looks like a magic carpet in the center of the room for ambiance. I added extra shelves in the full length closet to store the hundreds of videos, DVDs and books I own on. I also went to Wal-Mart and picked up some of those clear plastic storage bins with drawers so I could organize and store all my props in the bottom half of the closet.
I have three magic posters nicely framed and hung on the walls. I also attached a small display shelf on the wall to show off a couple of my favorite magic wands. In one of the corners of the room I have another corner display shelf that displays my favorite Paul Harris illusion from "The Art of Astonishment". This shows two "ordinary" playing cards supporting a normal pencil in a most unbelievable way! I have a camcorder setup on a tripod to record my practice sessions so I can critique myself and make adjustments to my routines. I have a TV with a VCR/DVD in the corner to watch my magic videos and tapes of my performances and practice sessions. On top of the TV I have another great illusion of a full deck of 52 cards inside a non-gimmicked Jack Daniel's Bottle (square fifth sized!), once again courtesy of "The Art of Astonishment". Also in the room is a performance roll-on table complete with shelves. Other nice touches are a Mist of Dreams water fountain that sends off a nice eerie fog and a clapper that turns on and off the lights in the room simply by snapping my fingers or saying an incantation with the right inflexion of course. The one thing I'm really missing in the room is a nice set of custom magic curtains. I haven't had the time to search out someone who could make these for me. If anyone knows where I might be able to have the curtains made, please let me know. Oh yeah, one more thing. I have a lock on the door to keep out my nephews when when come over to visit! And that's my magic room ... ** Bill ** |

Wow you guys have some great practice space....can I paly at your house????:-)
I have a smallish loft space, working table at one end with my tools and kit for making, fixing props, and an area to work my routines with a mirror, but alas because of the lay out if I want to set up my camcorder I have to use another room. The other good thing about my loft is its cold and scarry so no one else will go up there.... |

My bedroom is my magic room or as they say on MTV Cribs... "This is where the magic happens..." Seriously though.. I have one wall dedicated to all my friends and some of the great performers of our time. I hung as many 8 x 10 glossy photos up.. My favorites are Blackstone Jr., Jeff McBride, and Copperfield. I also display a lot of my more memerable pieces like a Blackstone Jr. autographed lightbulb and a sketch Andre' Kole did with his autograph and dated... Above my entertainment center I've displayed many of my parlor-style illusions such as a Owen's Square -Circle, a Bim-Bam Box, a custom illusion I built much like a flash appearance Dove Tray/ Crystal Box, and two sets of handcuffs (for those of you who you thought those were on the bed....sorry). I have a drawingboard where I draw many of my custom illusion designs.. .above it, I've framed the drawings from Jim Stienmeyer's Modern Art.. These drawings give a great modern artsy- art deco look as well... Above my headvboard is a large framed poster of Houdini...
Needless to say, my room has a constant theme of magic... Hope this inspires your magic room... Bryan P.S. -I collect 8 x 10s of magicians...if you woild like to contribute to my mini wall -o- fame, please PM me... |

Can we post pictures here?
I have a magic room. I just don't go into it often enough! It has a small table in one corner with magazines, books and props and a desk in the other corner with my Macintosh (which needs a new monitor *cy*) Along the wall I have pictures of myself performing at the Clam Chowder Festival YEARS ago and posters from the 100 years of magic posters book mounted on foam core.

I don't think there is anyway to post pictures other than very small thumbnails. If you have a website you can always past in a link to your pictures.

Does anybody have photos showing how they converted a room to a magic room? Looking for ideas to store and practice.

I've got a big closet in our game room in the basement. That's it. But I'm a hobbyist, not a pro.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I have had a few over the years, changing as I would move, or as life changed. I had a really nice one in Alabama, but a growing family turned that into a kid's room. So, I moved to the basement (nice finished basement), where I had a nice display going again. A couple years later, a hurricane flood destroyed some of it, and the rest was put in waterproof containers and jacked up on pallets to keep it safe. That room was never the same again.
It all came with me when I moved to Illinois a few years ago, and has been boxed and crated since then, in a basement that has proven to be dry, even through the record setting flood we had last year (I live right on the Illinois River). So... I am now in the process of organizing my magic "dungeon". The basement is otherwise unfinished and sufficiently creepy. What I have been told is that the original owner of the house hung himself just inside the door. In the past couple weeks, I have been adding a ton of cheap shelves (what I could afford), and am adding a few other fixtures before I start to unload the hoard of magic crap I've accumulated in the 50+ years I've been doing this. The only entrance in or out is a narrow, steep stairwell from my garage workshop into the dungeon. Considering my love for Halloween and spooky magic it should be my favorite magic room yet!

My magic room looks very similar to those shown in pictures of a wizard's chamber - in fact, that is from where I got inspiration. Lots of books (two 4'x8'cases), some ancient instruments (reproductions) and interesting wall hangings. My walking staves are in one corner and some of the crossbows I have made are hanging on the wall. Many of my nicer looking magical items are displayed in front of my books. I even have a model of DS9 hanging from the ceiling! I also have a framed poster of Einstein as the "Cosmic Magician".
My shop has, over the last couple of years, been acquiring much of my working magical collection, for I have a large mirror (4'x5') with my portable table that I made for street performing set up in front of it, for practicing. Two smaller mirrors (1'x6') are set up to provide visual feedback at 45 degrees from the table. Eventually the back room of my shop will become my office, at which time my magical library and computer will be moved, making it the default location of my magic, and becoming my new magic room (my wife wants to turn the old room into her sewing/knitting room). |
