I have been studying the art of magic for about a year and a half and I am interested in joining S.A.M. I am sure this would be benneficial to me but I am not sure if I need to have more experience to apply. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks, Brandin |

Could you please explain the differences between the two organizations?

They are very similar, both dedicated to the furthering of magic as an art.
The decision on which to join is usually predicated on the closest Assembly/Ring for the monthly meetings. Check them out for yourself: IBM: http://www.magician.org/ SAM: http://www.magicsam.com/ Both require at least one sponsor but that should be no trouble; if you are really stuck, e-mail me and I'll help you out. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

If you search the archives, I am sure you will find plenty of discussions on this topic. Both SAM and IBM want members who have at least two years of serious "interest" in magic, not necessarily that many years of experience. You can learn more about these organizations through their websites. ( http://www.magicsam.com and http://www.magician.org ) The important question is, is there a local chapter/assembly of either organization in your area? It's nice to "belong," but the more significant benefit is in associating with other magicians. ..even if it's not necessarily as part of a formal organization.

Local chapters of IBM and SAM tend to be more of a social gathering place for like minded amateur magicians (not always but usualy), nothing wrong with that. The main benefit from membership tends to be their monthly magazines which contain a fair amount of magic and many ads for the latest magical toys (More in the Linking Ring -IBM than in the MUM -SAM). It does also usually have a section in the back submitted by each club telling you what has been going on in their groups (another benefit - knowing what others are doing).
The other BIG difference between the IBM and the SAM is that the SAM has never had a group of magicians that didn't like the way the board was elected sue the "amateur" organization. They also made false accusations against several well known magicians that were of course unfounded. They felt it was their "right" to have the club run their way or no way. Pretty sad to see an amatuer group, designed to be there for like minded magic enthusiasts to become a play field for ego stroking ladder climbers. However, there was also an SAM ruccus over why they would not allow a celebrity (two actually) into their last big convention because the registration desk was closed and they could not register to come in and buy some magic at the dealer booth. Pretty sad when someone who has brought magic to the forefront once again is denied a chance to come in to the dealer room and rub shoulders with many that would have loved to meet him. Many feel it was merely a popularity contest. Anyway, join at your own risk but personally, the SAM has a lot more to offer, as well as an improved magazine that is chock full of good magic. Just my opinion. PSIncerely Yours, Paul Alberstat http://www.stores.ebay.ca/abstagecraft |
