I have just received a beautiful magnetic S&S in euros, made by Eddie Gibson, and my problem is a bit strange. Both parts look incredibly new and pretty. But the 50 cents piece is dated 1999. The inconsistency stands out a mile.
I don't suppose I'm the first one to have this problem, so can anyone suggest a safe way to make it look a little...dirtier? Older? Should I just carry it around in a pocket for a while or rub it in the dust? I should add that the s&s works perfectly and I am very happy about my purchase! |

It make look strange to you but out of my pocket full of Euro coinage, none larger than a 5 euro cent look the slightest bit tarnished. The euro coins do not tarnish like older coinage do.

Well, my Tango S&S blends in so well I can't tell it apart from the rest of the coins. Euros do get a little dull, and the outlines of the images on the coin faces become a little darker over time.
A solution will be to carry a selection of shiny coins in my pocket whenever I take my coin unique with me, I guess! |

I've notice the 1999 also and got busted a few time... I just say it was from the first "print" as they had to see it coming... doesn't always work though...
in order to get them older, well, ya just got to use it over and over again... otherwise, try to put some ash or dust/mud/chocolate to make it look rather dirty... it will blend in I guess

What's the inconsistency? Different coins are different ages? That seems like a non-issue. I would understand if the nested coin was new on one side and worn on the other - that would be a problem.

The problem is that you normally can't find 1999 euro coins in the market (never seen one)
But I think theyexist as the production started in 99 Still, back to the topic. If you really want to stain it, try French Bordeaux... let it dry on it, it will kill it!

The Gibson Unique Coin is very well made. It makes the typical tinny sound associated with all [ of this kind, but it performs fine and I can't really fault it on anything.
Except that the two euro coins in the set look freshly minted. It doesn't look like normal pocket change, and to make a switch (if I ever needed to) I'd have to use another two "brand new" coins. I know many will be thinking "take some of your pocket change to Todd Lassen" but if I didn't it's because I can't right now. So, I have to play around with the Gibson set (which, I repeat, in euros is quite excellent) until the shininess fades a little. And meanwhile, while I practice non-gaffed methods, perform with a non-magnetic s&S Tango set which leaves everyone astonished. |

When I've learnt the non-gimmicked versions I hope I can make all the coins shine...
Just for the record (as these posts are archived for years), after a week of not cleaning the gaffed coin and generally doing the opposite of what Eddie Gibson suggests to keep it shiny, it became dull enough to blend in with the rest of my pocket change. I have almost spent it once - the ultimate test. Now I'll keep it clean as per Eddie's written instructions. |

Who reads dates on coins???

It wasn't the date so much that bothered me, more the idea that I'd have to pretend to find a freshly minted 1 euro and an equally bright and reflective 50 cent piece in my pocket change. It also puts a limit on borrowing coins and giving them back. Maybe the British version is different.
Here's something that happened this week (unrelated to the subject of the thread). On Tuesday, at a friend's house, I was asked to show the "disappearing euro" trick to his 5-year-old daughter. I performed it with a silk, and the girl was really amazed. But then she had a tantrum when I refused to do it again (though I offered an alternative game), so I eventually gave in. The second time she grabbed the whole 50 out of my hand and ran out of the room with it, and nobody could stop her! "It's only 50 cents," said the mother when she saw the look on my face. "Pass me my bag and I'll give you another. Let her play with your coin for a while." Not an easy situation, and the main reason I never use gaffed coins with children. But suddenly the girl came back, even more astonished than before. She gave me back the coin and tried to explain to her parents what she'd done. Luckily they couldn't make it out and the moment was forgotten. But I knew. Somehow she'd got the i..... in backwards and couldn't believe her eyes! My SOH is coming along, fortunately, so it won't happen again. |

Mmm, then I would say either the french are VERY attentive and curious, or they just are pains in the ass that want to bust you everytime you show a trick...
I know I pay attention to those silly dates as I've been busted a couple of time doing switches. Eventually, I had to come with an "extra" trick out of that: coin travel in time!!! could you beleive that? ;D Caubeck... to prevent kids from grabing your coins, just perform standing up... the little "darling" can't jump that high !
