The most powerful effect that I've come across Is the Out Of This world effect by Paul Harris. It can be found in The Art Of Astonishment vol. 3. A simple stack, simple shuffle, 1 card to remember, the rest is performance. It's a 1 hit wonder.
Astonishment as Therapy...?

Matcho! by Ed Marlo. Ungaffed version. I think the first version in the pamphlet called "Marlo Meets His Match" I think still available from Magic Inc.

Simplicity?
Nothing beats David Regal's tricks although too numerous to mention. |

The Thumb Print trick... I don't know who this is by. A card is selected and I have the volunteer push down on the face of the card with their thumb. The card is returned and cut into the deck several times. I spread the cards face up on the table and I look at their thumb print to find the card. This trick is lots of hype and most people love it.

I'd like to add Chad Long's "Shuffling Lesson" (Art of Astonishment, Magic For Dummies) and Danny Archer's "Lost and Smelled" (Still Working Alone).

There are some excellent choices in this thread. I would also like to put in a word for JC's Super Closure. I've tried this to great effect using a deck switch after having apparently dropped and spilt the cards on the floor. There is so much magic for so little effort.

Daley's last trick would be my favorite.
Next will be 21 cards if it has to be really easy.
