Hi Guys,

I was playing around with some discs (mini cd's) the other day, seeing what I could do with them. I was trying to find things to do other than just vanish and appear them. One idea I came up with was changing one into a star then producing a short wand to place it on top off to make one of those star wands.

Has anybody else got any novel ideas of things that could be done with discs? I'm trying to think creatively and any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

All the best,
Darren.

There was a book out not too long ago (I think) that was about CD manipulation.

BTW: I like the star idea.

Thanks for that RT.

Yeah I have some books on CD stuff, but I'm trying to come up with new novel ideas/transformations to do rather than just a variety of appearances/dissapearances.

So not so much looking for technicalities but just interesting ideas really.

Incorporate the use of a silk and do some of the moves in a jumbo coin routine (I don't do this personally, but it looks nice). CD can change size, perhaps colour too.

cheers,

Float a CD
Transform it into Silver Snow storm or silver mouth coils ( I think they call it Mylar)

Have different music playing for each CD and the same CD keeps popping up (Like groundhog day with Bill Murry)
You could also have a music CD playing then shrink the CD and have the music play like chipmunks
Broken & Restored CD
Color Changing CD
Diminishing CD routine
CDs from the mouth - use mini
Produce a floppy disk (square) for laughs 1/2 way through your routine and finish with a laptop computer production with your name on the screen.

Depending on the audience you could use some blue material (a great bit from the movie "Fletch" with Chevy Chase- he's listening to his dictaphone and up pops up sex noises that he taped earlier, it would be funny if you couldn't get rid of the CD-it keeps reapearing or you could do a Tony Robbins motivational
bit, with the tape going "I am a good person I am a good person which could be funny if it's your voice.

good luck

Hello,
I have a "CD Manipulation Manual" available. You may read about it at Denny & Lee's. I have also won several first place awards for it too. I hope this helps.

Saw a new one called wipe it clean.
Magican shows an empty CD case and inserts a CD into the case. The magican then covers the CD case with a silk that was sitting on the table. He removes the silk and shows the CD in the case has vanished and now has a clear plastic, see through CD inside. Can also be made to have vanished and have nothing in its place.
looks nice on stage or up close.

What I think Darren is after is for all of us to think outside the box. Many of the ideas mentioned above are good ones and can be done, but, however, they have been done before. I think he wants us to think even harder at things that have NOT been done or ideas that seem not so logical. This creates creativity and expands the world of magic.

When thinking of ideas, we need not to wonder HOW the thing will be done so much as we are to just come up with some cool ideas. Thinking technique or how to only hinders creativity.

For example, we can use the idea of transition and transition from one effect into another effect to create soemthing totally unique. For example...

You produce a cd and decide to place it in your walk man. The music starts but blurs our on the sound track. Disgusted you pop it out and look at it. You vanish it but it keeps popping back. You fiunally get rid of it and produce a different cd.

This cd gets placed into the walkman only for the same thing to happen. So you get an idea and poop open the walkman and basically steel the laser from inside of it. (dLite) You hold the laser and the cd starts to spin on your finger. You bring the laser to the cd and it begins to play. Comedy happens when the first song is Barney';s theme. You quickly change to a different track.

Perhaps this track is a song familiar to lay people but has a theme. (not sure exactly what it could be yet) The music continues to play. The light goes off and you look at the disc. You then fold the disc into an origami bird as this song about flight or soaring higher continues to play. The folded up cd has now become a folded up paper bird.

You float it in your hand and it starts to flap its wings. You let it go and it flys away from youa little bit. You motion it back to you and it comes back and the minute it touches your hands.. in a flash the paper bird becomes a real one.

Now I have no idea how to actually do this, but I have ide4as. But the important thing is I let my mind wander tp create an idea that is different and unique through the use of teansition.

I also did not worry or rely so much on showing off skill as I did telling the audience a very cool story though my emotions, responses and stage movement.

This starts to get us to think outside of the norm. Start to think different then what we are used to or comfortable with.

Just my opinion. I think Darren was hoping we would go in this direction but I could be wrong. Just my thoughts.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions:

Kyle - Bang on!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was diffinately looking for original - not seen before ideas, you've hit the nail on the head. It's too easy to take standard effects and stick with them.

I love those ideas- especially the bird idea - that is class! Original transition effects are something that I think can really make an act stand out! Nice one!

Thanks. These are all thoughts that just jump into my head. I train msyelf every day with brainstorming and creative exercises and it really helps me to open my mind up more to try new things and think outside of what has been done before. I only hope they help you and inspire you. If you feel like using the idea, please go for it and just let me know how it turns out.

I have other suggestions and ideas if you care to hear them.

If anyone feels like bouncing ideas off me, please PM me. I would be always happy to help offer advice on cretivity for your act or a routine. It would be my pleasure.

You could rub away part of the CD, or in a series of vanishes only half of the CD goes, try again, you're left with a quarter, then wham a normal CD.
Cd on a string penetration...
Can you find the different colour ones?
Jumbo CD production (normal size or even an old LP)
How do they work with IT? Maybe you can do a Hummer card type of thing.
CD through silk...

Effects are great and certainly a good way to start, but never forget the most important first step in any act. That would be to well define your character on stage and just what exactly are you trying to tell or convey to the audience. This is so important as it acts like a companies message or philosphy. Everything in the act then goes back to relying on what you came up with to see if it fits or if it doesn't.

Ive seen a few cd workers, but I find Danny Cole's sleight of hand to be amazing. Obviously the discs are oversized for conventional manipulation, but Cole keeps all of his moves so natural, relaxed and clean (especially his final vanish). Anyway, keep an eye out for him.

I did shows today for the brunch at the Magic Castle, and in between shows I got to watch Danny Cole 3 times.

Holy Smokes! As many of you know, he won stage magician of the year. He certainly deserves it.

His originality is inspiring!

Hey fellows just some information for you. I did a complete cd act in I believe it was 1996 when SAM national covention was held in Boston. Not sure of the year. I have been competing with my new style cd act for about 6 years now. It has won numerous awards. I do routiine now talking about a hacker downloading secrets for the IBM and SAM data bases because they have been stolen.
