After going back and reading this post I don't think Todd meant anything against partimers. I see his point and feel the same way about amateur performers.
I have a lot of friends who have fulltime jobs and do magic partime. I refer work to them all the time. There is a HUGE difference in partime and amateur. When you hire out other entertainment out other than yourself you are putting your name with that entertainer. If they do a BAD job it can come back to you. But with this said I have seen MANY fulltime performers who really do a BAD job and I have seen many partimers who should be FULLTIME. Again I don't think Todd meant anything against those who do magic as a partime job. Ken |

Hi Todd, - well I just said: "Oooooo" didn't I, as I knew what was coming.
Let me tell you that we too have brought up two kids (now 13 and 19) on Children's Entertaining alone. I know you meant no offence as I've felt that way myself. I know exactly what you mean by "fly by night" entertainers too. We've seen so-called entertainers just do it (and badly) to pay monthly for a Landrover Discovery. We just had an old estate car at the time and were doing it for a living - so how were we to feel? It's human nature isn't it? You feel like saying to them: "how would you like it if I traded as part-time in your profession!" We are now financially very sound ourselves, reaping the rewards of something else; but yes, we know the struggles that many people in this Forum are going through. I've since come to the opinion that there are some superb "part-time" or "pensioned" entertainers around. If Dennis were in my locality as an example I'd be looking to pass his number on. If Peter Marucci were in my locality then yes, the same. Anyway Todd, you are a kindred spirit here, and we all understand. Tony. |

Eeeek! You mean I'm considered a "pensioned" entertainer! (It's true; I just don't like being considered one, though! LOL!) Anyhow, thanks for the kind words -- I guess! <G> |

I am in South Africa. I do not class myself as the best in my area but am good enough to get more shows from my last customers as well as referals, so I must be doing something right. I do class my shows as high quality though. I expect for my customers to get the best value for their money. If I get more that one show on specific days, I refer them to one of the other members of our CMC (Cape Magic Circle) Iknow the magicians well and know the quality of their shows. I will not pass on a show if their show is not up to my standard. I don't try to make anything off the show. If the other magician wishes to give me something as a thank you, I will accept that. In turn they refer some of their shows to me.

Hi Wolflock, that's all you need to be sucessfull, is to get that repeat work and referals. 95% of my work now is the same.
It doesn't matter who is the best, Sometimes in this area, Emazdad is busier than me, and then it will change and I'll be busier than him. In fact that's not even correct, because, we're normally doing an equal number of shows every month, but our diary's take turns at filling up first. But at the end of the day, as long as your earning a great living and enjoy what your doing, that's the only thing that counts. Keep busy! |

Exactly. As long as the children enjoy the shows too. Most important. Hee hee. I really love doing magic so I always enjoy performing.

When I pass on work there are several things I make absolutely that I am clear on:
1) That anyone I refer work to must be someone I have seen their act before. I will NEVER EVER refer anyone to a magician that I do not feel strongly that they are good and can handle the situation I will place them in. My reputation is everything and a bad performer can ruin it if I send them out to represent me and my show. 2) I make sure that I will only send out a performer who is appropriate for that market. Even my frioends and best magic buddies may get upset with me and say they can do kids shows. I know them well enough that they are close up performers and are awesome at close up. But I tell them honestly that I will not send them out for a kids show cause close up and kids shows are totally different animals. I make sure to refer work to those who specialize in the market that is being requested. 3) I only work with people who are as honest as I am and who I can trust and who have respect. The reason for this is that many magicians after doing a show YOU referred to them will try and steal that client away from you or at the party mention all they can do etc. This to me is not only not fair to me but is very dishonest. If I give you the gig, you are making money off of me. The only thing I ask is that you hand out my cards and information ans you would with any other entertainment agency you work for. There must be that trust factor there to make it work. 4) You also want to make an agreement that if you pass work on to them, that they in turn will pass work on to you. It really should be not a one way street both the street should go both ways. This is proper networking. Hope these ideas help. Kyle

It is all good. I just wanted us all to get back to really answering the initial question that was posted in the beginning. Let us get back to answering how we use testemonials and how we get them from clients we have worked for. These ideas and answers will only help to benefit everyone.

Oh sorry Peter; by "pensioned" I do not mean "old", as of course many ex-servicemen/women, fire services, police etc. retire at a very young age don't they? They then start a new career but of course have the pension for life from their former employment.

OK OK old gag, I couldn't resist it.
