How are sites like the learned pig project possible. Aren't there copy rights involved?

Not quite sure what you mean by this.
The books available on The Learned Pig are in the public domain, if that's your concern. |

do they have the legal right to reproduce them like they do?

Can anyone reproduce texts? Where and how do you get permission?

Go here to read about the extremely complex and ever changing (thanks Walt) copyright law.

Hey Doc,
Learned pig is able to reproduce those books because their copyrights have expired. It's kind of late and I can't recall the exact amount of years but basically after a certain amount of years (and I think there might be a stipulation that the author has died) a books copyright expires and it becomes public domain. This is actually where a large portion of Dover's books come from. If you ever look you'll notice they don't really have any that were originally published after 1955 or so. -Dan |

I think it's 50 years in the USA and 75 in the UK, or it was. The link given above will obviously give you the latest gen.
The Dover Expert Card Technique for example does not have chapters that were added in the third edition. Similarly, Bobo's Coin Magic is not identical with the hardcover version. The Learned Pig Site put out a CD of books that was excellent value. Paul. |

The copyright issue is not that simple. There are many rules and exceptions. Then it depends on the nationality of the author and where the book was published.
One rule for the US is that anything published before 1923 is in the public domain. Later there are all kinds of things which have to be considered. But beside the law there is also a moral issue. Even if something is legally in the public domain, there might still be somebody around who has at least a moral claim to see some money or royalties. I, that is Lybrary.com, pays royalties in certain circumstances even if the material is in the public domain. For example, I pay the Sharpe family for the "Hofzinser's Card Conjuring" royalties, although in the US this book is in the public domain. Chris Wasshuber

I got access to learned pig, but I found the content inside those books are simply not English that I understand.
However, most cardicians here say these books are a must.
