I am interested in buying Autome (via the Videomind DVD). I can't find enough information to tip my decision (search function not currently in operation - I have used Google but that can only do so much).
I wonder if you would be so kind as to answer the following questions: 1. If I am can perform the book test described in Marc Paul's lecture notes (entirely impromptu), why would I want Autome? (I've got an answer myself, obviously, otherwise I wouldn't be thinking about it, but I'd like your opinions). 2. How impromptu is Autome (I'm not clear on the requirements)? 3. Does Autome provide me with skills I could utilise elsewhere? 4. Any other comments? I'm not after methods, so please avoid giving too much away. Cheers, Beetroot |

Autome is one of my all time favorite book tests. As to whether or not it is impromptu, the answer is yes and no. As long as you have the right book available, then yes, however it cannot be done with just any book. It is also meant to be done in front of a larger group. It cannot be done one on one no matter what anyone here tells you. I cannot recommend this book test highly enough.

Beetroot, the principal taught does lend itself to other applications. I really like this a lot and would reccomend anything else put out by Max his thinking really is genius.

Hi Beetroot,
Very good questioning. Well, let me try to answer these from my point of view. Let me stat some personal comments on this first: I do own the Videomind series and I do perform autome quite often in my shows. I love this effect. I use a lot if book tests. Most of them are impromptu. Autome is the book test I perform in shows which is prepared a bit. I think I don't give away too much when stating that that the books are normal books but you have to find the right book. But it took my just about a half hour in a bookstore. The handling is diabolically clever and the reaction is tremendous! Here a short description of effect: You show 3 books. A spectator may choose one. Now you take your business card and 4 or 5 other spectators each freely write down a page number on the card. Then the spectator with the book chooses one page number. Opens the book at that page and reads the first lines or paragraphs. Now you draw or just verbally describe the content of these lines. Now to complete answering your questions: 1) Autome is a book test where you not only divine a single word but the content of the first one or two paragraphs. 2) As stated above its not impromptu. But books are unprepared. 3) Yes some of the method could be used on other routines like I do. 4) See above Hope this helps regards Thomas Posted: Nov 28, 2004 2:46pm --------------------------------------------- Hi again As I answered your post there was no other reply. I was interrupted so my reply took a while and didn't see the other responses. I just want to second the posts by dpe666 and kennedy. Once you performed this book test you will love it. regards thomas |

I’m not familiar with Marc Paul's book test, but I can try to answer some of your questions about Autome.
How impromptu is Autome? I would not call it impromptu as it utilizes certain specific books. Also, the nature of the test makes it suited primarily for performance in front of a decent sized audience. Sorry about not being able to provide more details. Does Autome provide me with skills I could utilize elsewhere? Yes, a certain valuable technique is taught. I have a strong suspicion, however, that you are already familiar with the technique. Any other comments? Autome’s a great book test, but I’m not sure if it meets the criteria you established. Nevertheless, I think that you should definitely pick up the video. It’s a great tape and you get 5 other effects in addition to Autome. You can pick up the VHS version for $15 at L&L. It’s a sure bet. Thanks, Elliott Posted: Nov 28, 2004 2:56pm -------------------------------------------- Wow! I have to learn to type faster as so many people beat me to the punch. At least the tip about the $15 buy at L&L should be of some value. Elliott |

I can only chime in on what the other guys has said about Autome.
If you in addition to the video invest in Ken Driscoll's NATURAL FORCE BOOKS I, you will have no problems with finding the right books to use. Sven

Take four paper back books and in less than a hour using the method in Natural Force Books I.....you can create at least two books ready for Autome book test.
Well not create......those that know what I mean...know what I mean. Judge Bean |

I have bought several second hand Autome books cheaply through Amazon in the UK.
The 3rd Deadly Sin by Lawrence Sanders Fountain Society by Wes Craven Red Dragon by Thomas Harris The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton All work fine. |

Those books work fine.
However, I think it is a point to find your own books. Sooner or later someone will perform Autome on your local TV channel, and you will get "the lumberjack syndrome" once again. For us guys not having English as our first language, Autome is just great. Just get the right books and do the routine in Swahilii if you so wish! ;o) Sven

Sven, I agree.
I use "Miss Smilla's feeling for snow" by Peter Hoegh, who is a Danish Author, and of course it plays well in Denmark. I believe I will be the only one (untill now) using that book in Denmark. The Autome booktest is based on a great and well known method within metalism. Mr. Maven applied it to a booktest, which makes perfect sense - brilliant. Actually I plan to enter with 4 books, and give a member from the audience an absolutely free choice between books. Depending on the book they choose I either perform 1) Autome, 2) Val Andrews unfaked booktest or 3) Richard Marks version of the Hoy Booktest. All 3 powerfull solutions and undetectable methods. I agree, Autome is a great effect, actually practiced the handling tonight a bit to keep fresh.
The only negative is the amount of spectators needed.

There is no problem in using it for an audience of 25 and up.
Should the number of spectactors be less than that, do the Hoy, Busch's routine or any other impromptu routine. Sven -...of course both the Hoy Booktest and Busch's also work great for big audiences!

Thanks for the responses everyone. I was unaware of the issue regarding number of spectators. Given that I only perform for family and friends (and perhaps the odd client) if the number of specs is ~25 then that puts it out of my range I'm afraid.
Perhaps I'm still interested enough in the thinking to purchase anyway. Hmmmmm! Cheers, Beetroot |

Also, make sure that the spectator who chooses the page number isn't intimately acquainted with any of the spectators who write on the business card. Otherwise there's a small possibility they may "notice" something.
Hope that's not exposing too much, but it's important to consider if you're performing for family and friends, even in groups large enough to do the routine. Cheers Andy

Just my 2 cents worth--
It's not hard to find books. Buy a bunch of cheap books and look at the top few lines, write down keywords on some paper. You don't even have to read the books, just skim the first 2 lines and write down potential keywords. At the end see if you have enough to do the test. When I did this booktest, I averaged 1 in 5 books that would work. Tom |
