I see a new ad on the MagicSmith site for an effect called "Mental Clip" by John T. Sheets. It proposes to allow a nice "Mental Epic" type of effect out-of-the-pockets.
Any opinions on this one or any other approaches to an out-ot-the-pocket "Mental Epic" effect. Thanks, Keith |

Hmm... get the Richie Technique from Docc... Son of Mindscan (a.k.a. Telepathy 2000 in the U.K.)... any number of billet routines covered in Corrinda and Annemann...
Need I continue? If the name you have used here is any indicator, I do believe I've read that method elsewhere. It's not as "spur of the moment" as you are possibly being lead to believe, if that is the case. You will need a certain part of the "system" to do it, but it will look pretty clean. Hint: Lee Earle has a neat bit in the Syzygy videos that uses this method along with some travel brochures. If you're creative in the least, you'll get a feel for what can be done... what is possible. In short, I think this is a new slant on an old (albeit, clever) idea.

Mental Clip by John T. Sheets uses a metal clip and billets. It's the handling of the billets that makes this so clever, and it can be done anytime, anywhere. Works great for laymen because it looks so clean. The price is not bad either.

I've used Mental Clip. The method is diabolically brilliant. What makes it so good is that the spectator receives the correct prediction, in its correct position on the clip, at the conclusion of the effect. There is no fumbling, or switching the order of the billets around (if you catch my drift)
Unfortunately, like mental epic (and other effects that use the "same" method), it's the search for the elusive, convincing force all over again. |

Craig, you're wrong...this is not what you think it is. (I thought so on hearing of it initially, too, but it's not at all).

Maybe they should change the name... then again, keeping the existing name throws people like me "off" track... (as this obviously did). Thus, we have another version of a mental classic...

Mental Clip is a brilliant idea and thoroughly practical in every respect. In short, it's a worker. I carry it regularly in my mail order biz (as well as perform it for $$$) and highly recommend it.
For those who are now saying to themselves, "Of course he recommends it, he sells it...." allow me to remind you that I hand pick everything that I carry and only carry materials that I feel (for whatever worth my opinion may be to you ) are world class and superior. I just returned from the Magic In The Rockies convention where no less a performer than Bob Cassidy was singing the praises of the Mental Clip. It's an extremely good piece. If your local dealer doesn't carry it (and chances are that they don't), feel free to drop me a note OFF LIST at MarkyApril@aol.com, and I'd be happy to supply it to you or give you more info. Thanks for listening!! Mark Strivings

Folks, I had to reply to this one. Mark showed me the Mental Clip the last time he came through here, and I bought one! It really is a brilliant idea, and it works great! I would highly recommend it to anyone who is considering it for purchase.

I just read the description of it on MagicSmith. I've always found it kind of strange that you ask 2 impossible questions, then you have them pick a card.
Eg: Pick any country in the world you'd like to vacation in ....then name any one famous in history, ...then, pick a card. Does this really kill routine wise? Or is the fascination on the clever gimmick? Really curious. E-Leoni. |

[quote] The solution to that problem is very simple: don't ask impossible questions for the first two items. Keep everything within reasonable limits and there's problem with the final force of a card or whatever else you may be using. For instance, one of the 50 states for spectator one, a favorite hour of the day (in military time for the widest selection) for spectator number two, and a selected card for spectator number three. All of the selections are reasonable. This really isn't that tough. And yes, Mental Clip does kill. Just make sure you stay clear of the shrapnel (sp?)... Mark Strivings

Just wanted to add a quick note concerning this item. I just received the clip this past weekend & honestly right after ordering it the concept dawned on me, and then I thought $20 for that!!!
But you know what, John Sheets has came up with an excellent combination of principles, and after receiving the clip I was quite happy with the purchase. I would easily recommend this as a worker to anyone. Oh, and Mr. Cassidy is also correct. Tom Boehnlein |

The roaches around my house found it too confining. Would it work with crickets?

I saw this advertisement but really got not much confidence in it. It seems just like "another prop". BUT NOW, with endorsement by Mr.Mark Strivings, I can go ahead to get it without any doubt!
Thanks Mark. And BTW, for those who have never seen before Mark's Open and Shut routine (which is an ultra clean card prediction effect, where the spectator calls out any number and the deck is dealt to that number. It matches a prediction that is on the table all the while), go get it. I like it a lot |

Finally got mine in the mail and, while I'm not exactly disappointed, I'm not blown away either. This is one that I wish I could have seen performed (and the resulting audience impact) before purchasing. Don't get me wrong. I will definitely work through the routining and try this out. I do remember how amazed I was by the primary underlying principle the first time I witnessed it in action.

I should state upfront that I have a stake in Mental Clip, though only a small one. I wrote the directions for John. More importantly, I use it regularly.
To overcome the problem with using a mere card force for the third item, don't use a card force. I have frequently used Die Cipher II. Have them put the die in the container under the table, so even they don't know the number. That makes the revelation more powerful as they read the slip before lifting the top off. If you do use a card force, do the same. Keep it face down until after the slip is opened. It helps increase the impact. Bob LaRue Omnibozo |

I will say that I have never been disappointed by anything recommended to me by Mark Strivings or anything I purchased from Mark. I have only been pleased. Some things I have used more than others, some I have yet to use, but I have always gotten good and full value.
Mark is a serious performer (with a delightful sense of humor), and a good resource to have available and a fine businessman. He won't steer you wrong. I always ask Mark his opinion of some thing he carries. Some things I did not purchase and other things I do. When I got the Mental Clip I went - oh wow - how simple. Duh!!!! And was only disappointed that I hadn’t considered the method first. Using it is great. I practiced with different colored post-it notes. Really helped. Enjoy! Rex |

As a new member to this forum but longtime performer in the field, I sense there's a lot of self-congratulations going on among the old-timers who write in.
As for me, I've learned to be very skeptical about products that receive endorsements from people with great reputations. It's better to be independent. Think for yourself, not judge something by what some famous mentalists say, because nobody at the places I perform has heard of these guys, who end up making money off of us. |
