Hi,

I am interested in using the 'Smoking Thumb' effect, which was made famous by Fred Kaps, in my act.

However, the traditional method of which I am aware means having to actually smoke while performing the effect, and I really would not do this, even to perform a great trick like this!

Are there any other methods or versions available of this to buy in which it is not necessary to smoke or use a cigarette in, and refills (chemicals) do not have to be constantly bought for?
Thanks for the help!

Don't mess with chemicals. The cigarette smoke is minimal and if you don't INHALE what's the problem?

From your Avatar you look too young for smoke tricks anyway...

Stay away from the smoke effects because you may end up smoking

Don't use chemicals becuase they have a tendancy to kill you or make you really really sick for an effect that is simply not worth the pain it can cause.

so my advice stay away from the trick.

Interesting fact - Tom Mullica does not smoke!

Due to the widely negative perception of cigarettes and smoking in general, my advice is to stay away from anything that remotely resembles a trick using cigarettes or cigarette smoke First, many establishments won't even allow it anymore so it becomes a pain.. That's just my opinion. This is really too bad because there are some great cig effects and manipulations out there but the risk is too high in alienating a very large percentage of the crowd. Some of which tend to be hyper sensitive to this particular subject. By this, I am referring to smaller shows such as Birthdays, Weddings, Blue and Gold, etc. If you are doing a very large stage show where people paid to see you, I think you can get away with it easier, if the venue will even allow it. I know there are many that have made their living doing it in the past and I’m sure there are still some around today, but it’s got to be betting tougher. Especially for those doing smaller shows. Again, just my opinion.

Sam,

That's a mighty impressive website you have. I suspect you're very accomplished, and at what appears to be a relatively young age. I tend to agree with my fellow Café members, though, that it's probably a good idea to stay away from smoking tricks. I do think it's great that you know Fred Kaps and have studied his work. His endless salt pour from the palm might be a worthy substitute for the smoking thumb. Why not give that a try?

Good luck to you.

It has been well over a month and you have not responded. So, what's your thinking now?

Thanks for all the input.
As said in my original post, I have no intention of ever smoking, and I was just wondering if there were any other ways to perform it without having to smoke. I will now know to stay away from this trick in the future!

I understand that I am too young to perform smoke tricks, but I thought of possibly being able to perform it differently to the traditional style, eg. not suggesting to the audience that I am lighting a pipe, etc., instead I could incorporate it into my card manipulation routine (ie. card fans from the smoke), but that was just a vague idea, and I will stay away from it now...hope that makes sense...!

As a matter of fact, I am currently working on the long pour salt, which is a much safer option!

Thanks again,
Sam

The chinese version of putting cotton in your mouth and blowing smoke does not use tabacco products. It does require you to put burning cotton material in your mouth.

Paul Diamond sold a wooden thingy that you used to protect your mouth.

Yeah I remember Paul Diamond did that in a lecture in Kansas City many many years ago. Very funny routine, the smoke went on forever. I purchased one then and did have a lot of fun with it. Although it did use a cigarette.

I am morally opposed to this effect. I will never buy it or support it.

I bought the smoking your thumb gimmick. It was not as cool as one might expect. I ended up burning my hand a lot and now I have lung cancer. Im just kidding, I didn't burn my hand that much. I'M KIDDING! I don't have lung cancer, just a dry sense of humor. Seriously, though smoke effects are dangerous. I agree that cigarette smoke is the least hazardous. I mean you don't want to inhale the titanium tetrachloride smoke, that's for sure. Um, try getting a sprizzer gimmick, and filling it with baby powder. OR hey why not just palm a squeeze bulb, with baby powder in it. Much safer.
