I’ve been collecting strange decks from US Playing cards in an effort to get 52 different designs. From these I intend to make 52 “rainbow decks.” I am intent on keeping the face designs to standard Bicycle. Thus certain US Playing card decks have been excluded e.g. any one with Hoyle faces and any deck with Casino dark red etc. I want all the faces to match nearly perfectly.

I’d also like to have all white bordered cards. So far I have about 30+ decks that meet these criteria. I need 22 more! and I doubt that there are 22 such decks around. If I had 40 different designs, I might consider 12 duplicates. A deck so constructed would still function well as a rainbow deck.

I might consider using borderless decks like Bee since I have several borderless strange-backed decks from US Playing cards e.g. a Coke deck and a couple others.

I have a photo showing what I have so far. It’s posted at http://www.mallofmagic.com/images2/decks.htm . The Aristocrat decks (bottom of photo) are not in good shape and I’d love to get a red and a blue either for cash or trade. There was a yellow deck from a New York Magic Symposium that I’d like to get too. I realize that I can get a red Torpedo and a Red Aviator deck. These should be available. That pushes the number up 2…

I’d love to find out what other designs exist and I’m ready to buy or trade for them to increase the number toward 40 or 50 if possible. I have some Moosehead decks, some of the green decks, some of the black decks, some of the Atlanta Olympics deck and a few other types for trade.

Also are there any opinions on the use of borderless cards in this mostly bordered deck?? Maybe the bordered cards would look fine in the spread of 52 different backs…

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

I think there are some old Magic Castle decks which have the Bicycle faces. I have one Tomfoolery deck and one Yukon Gold deck. I think there are different colored versions of the one's I have. Any others I'm missing??

Hmmm. I didn't see any Jerry's Nugget decks in there. Do they have bike faces??? I have one here in red that's in new condition but I might have pulled a card out of it already. I'll check and let you know. Maybe a couple of others too. I'll have to check my card stash.

Jerry's made some in Bicycle and others not. If you have the Bicycle version I'd be interested in picking it up. It would be cool to have a red and a blue.

Thanks for your help!

It might be a good idea to check to see if the playing card companies have any advertising specialty decks that were never paid for. I see them in Big Lots or dollar stores, ocasionally.

Mike I got a couple of Ramlbler Aluminum edge decks. I wonder if you have some. I believe they are quite rare.

I'm still locking for a *rainbow* deck in Pokersize matching Bicycle faces..
Re castle decks and Tom Foolery decks they both came in red and blue, I've one of each, but they are slightly used, so I will not offer them to you Mike Smile

If you intend to sell a such rainbow deck one day -assuming you get finally 52 decks assemblet-, could you please put me on the list?
TIA..

All I can say Mike, is good luck! Smile

Randy Wakeman settled for printing up a poker size Rainbow deck deck on Carta Mundi European card stock (still available).

But I can see you're a patient guy...

Thanks for the input guys. I've been accumulating these decks for quite awhile. I have some Jerry's nuggets that will boost the total to 35. I do need a red and a blue Aristocrat since the ones I have are used and in bad shape.

I don't think it's going to be possible to get 52 white bordered with normal bike faces. If I add borderless cards e.g. Bee, I may be able to get close.

I still have a dozen of the original Wakeman rainbow decks that are Bike faces. Unfortunately they were printed in Canada and the colors on the picture cards look washed out. They didn't use a 4 color process. I could add 4 or 5 cards from the Wakeman bike decks. Unfortunately they are very strange looking compared to the detailed back designs on the decks I have.

By adding borderless decks and a few wakeman decks (without using court cards) I could probably reach 52.

Any thoughts??

You're missing some of the older Bicycle backs like the Fan and the High Wheel Back. You can find these back designs and other discontinued backs in the Canasta, solitaire and euchre combo deck packs.

Mike,

You might find a few decks on my website that meet your criteria. Part of what's holding you back is your insistence on Bicycle brand faces. If you relaxed that a little, you would put together a Rainbow deck much faster. I know because I provided cards for George Tovar to put together a Rainbow deck last year. George insisted only on white borders and poker size, and put together the requisite 52 decks rather easily.

Also, be aware that since so many decks come in red and blue backs, many home-made Rainbow decks often suffer from too much red and blue, and not enough "rainbow." I would concentrate your search on decks other than red and blue.

Thanks Rob. That's a good source for Aviator and Torpedo. I'm missing the Red backs in those designs.

Thanks for the input Jason. If I use 10 decks of the Wakeman Bicycles, I will be staying with bordered and putting in a LOT of color. Maybe this is the best compromise. These are Bicycle faces and by using 10 decks, I can stay away from the anemic looking picture cards. Unfortunately these decks retail for $20 and they are not available any longer. The new rainbow decks are Gemaco (I think) - definitely not by US Playing cards.

I would have totally consistent faces and all cards would be poker size with white borders. This might be the way to go, especially since it solves the lack of lots of colors problem. Although if you look at the photo at
http://www.mallofmagic.com/images2/decks.htm
you'll see that there is a fair amount of color already. If I add in a blue and a red Jerry's Nugget (very bright colors) and a couple more traditional backs with 10 or 12 from the Wakeman decks I might have a really nice rainbow deck. It might be necessary to put the deck in a preferred order to maximize the color contrast and eliminate blocks of red or blue...

I checked those Jerry's Nuggests I've got in the office upstairs. They are red backed and look like bikes however there are no jokers and the king of clubs as been shaved into a regular short card so they may be of no use to you. I had a number of those decks a few years ago but I gave them to my friend Jerry.

If you can use this one I have left let me know and you can have it no charge (yes, I know people pay big bucks for Jerry's on ebay but it's not about the money). Just send me one of the rainbow decks when you get them done.

.Even If you would sell a deck to me I know it would be exspensive .everyone is looking for these cards. On ebay someone was selling 2 .It went up to over 200 dollars.Jerry or someone should reproduce these cards.I've seen them everywhere,in all the videos back from the 80's.I was wondering if you have an old deck that I can get 5 to 10 out of to perfrom cardboard chameleons and other color changing routines.

Thank you

Hi Mike

A dealer in the UK, Magicbox, have an exclusive on Bright Green back Bikes:-

http://www.magicbox.uk.com/product.php/909/11817/

Clive and his team are very very helpful, hope this takes you one nearer the 52.

Al.

P.S. If you do make and intend selling a few on then I'd be very interested in a deck from you, good price paid of course.

P.P.S. I presume you are aware of the Black back Bikes (not the tactical ones which have the dark red pips)?

The Jerry's decks were made on Bee stock I believe. I like the way Bee's feel too. Flexible, yet strong. They can take a lot of abuse. If Mike P. doesn't want the deck I don't mind giving it to someone else who could put it to good use. Remember, it has one of the cards cut short and no Jokers that I could see. It's just sitting on my shelf gathering dust. I don't need the $$. I'd rather make friends and have fun.

Always cut the cards!!!

Tabman, I'm always looking for new and unique decks of cards for my collection.

I don't care about the jokers, and the King doesn't bother me.

I'll be your friend either way, and we can have a hell of a lot of fun!
