"Exposure" is when someone tips the info to an audience through ineptness or disregard for the material at hand. "Exposure" is when someone who has no professional need to know is exposed to a method.
"Sharing" of info is what happens between peers and professionals. I have borrowed books and loaned them to comrades in the craft. This is part of what makes a community ir in some cases a guild. Neither TRI nor the PEA have revelatory information that comes up in a google search. The Magic Café Forums and alt.magic do. As to whether a member's value should be based on whether they perform for money or not, I will tip this much info: If you look carefully around the edges of magic and Mentalism you will discover that some of the brightest thinkers and indeed often the highest paid consultants are those members who do not often set foot upon a stage. Exposure is tipping something that is a secret. Buy the secret or be left out.
Just the ranting of a big mouthed PERFORMER! |

Now we have an interesting question - what is exposure? In my mind it is just as egregious to tip where in print a performer's signature effect which they discovered and honed may be found. But that happens all the time here, doesn't it.
And is it exposure to explain the workings of a secret if that secret was not the seller's to sell in the first place? Is it exposure if I say, this trick is the same as such and such? That happens here all the time as well. What if I tipped, for example, all the work Bill Dodson did in the 90's on certain principles would I be guilty of exposing Cerebro? Afterall, I knew of Bill's work probably before Dr. Z was out of middle school. And what if your performing partner sees you perform a trick and you share it with them, is that exposure? Your wife or girlfriend? What if you trade tricks. You may have paid for one secret, but the other person didn't. Do you have permission to sell a secret after you have learned it? If so, everyone who has ever sold something on ebay is guilty of exposure, no? What if a magic dealer decides to tip the method in hopes of convincing you to buy an item? Is that exposure? Is that his risk to take? Afterall, he may not have been the creator. So, Dr. Z. I don't think the world is as simple as you think. And simply because one is a performer, does not make one a good performer. |
