I just found out from my "wonderful" landlord that I'm not allowed to have a rabbit in my apartment. I hope to move at some point, however, in the meantime, I was thinking of other possible arrangments. Maybe buy and pay for a rabbit and its food etc that is kept by someone else nearby, etc. Maybe "rent" a rabbit from a pet store for a show or two as needed. Has anyone had this situation and tried similar solutions? Thanks. I'm bummed about this.

I suppose the test for this idea would be, would you do this if you wanted a dog but could not keep it in your apartment.

Some pet stores will rent a rabbit for a day or part thereof. Check around your area to see who can help you. I use two rabbits in my act (I can keep mine at home) and I have never trained them in any way to do what is needed. I have heard of other magicians who have "worked" with their rabbits to get them to do things, but depending on what you have in mind, it is not really necessary. I use mine in productin box type illusions like the doves to rabbit and the Tora Strange Box. All they have to do is sit in a small, but not cramped, area until they are revealed. At the most, they are in the illusion waiting their turn for 2 to 3 minutes. When they appear, they are picked up and carried off stage.

Hi Jim -
If there is a nearby day care center or senior center, you should be able to make arrangements to house your rabbit there. Supply the food and the cage, and your rabbit will be well socialized, and a bright spot for some people who need a little friend. When in college, I loaned my new rabbits to day cares for a couple of weeks to acclimatize them to children's sounds, and the rabbits were always well treated. On more than one occasion, the directors have offered to house them full time, as many kids, including the shy ones, really blossom under the (really minor) responsibilities of caring for the rabbit. The kids are impressed that the rabbit is a big star in a magic show. If it's a permanent housing for the rabbit, keep a note on the rabbit's cage sharing the rabbit's touring schedule, so the kids won't be surprised when they show up and the cage is empty for the day. (Shhh! it's also free advertising.) --- Guy |

That a great idea Guy.
Renting a rabbit sounds rediculous to me. I use a rabbit in every show. You need to bond with the new assistant. You need to reherse with him as well. Renting=bad idea in my opinion. If you can't keep one and MUST have one I think Guy's ideas have a lot of merit. You would still own the animal and have it available as needed. And it sounds like a good deal for everyone involved!

It worked for me; as I recall, Paul Diamond (or perhaps Tom Ladshaw, can't remember who said it now) suggested it during one of my regular pilgrimages to his shop back in the early 80's.
The best rabbits I've raised spent their early years in "day care." --- Guy |

Thanks, Guy and everyone, that is a great idea. I wonder though if I would have weekend access to my pet rabbit at the daycare? If I could find a daycare close to my place, that would be very convient. Thanks again for the great idea (and the marketing angle!)

Depends on the center. Some towns do have 7 day facilities, of course. If you develop a secure relationship with the folks, you might get key access for your weekend/evening needs.
Otherwise, I'd imagine there might be days when the rabbit needs to spend the night with you due to show timing, but you mentioned "a show or two" as your needs. This wouldn't be a good solution if a rabbit is performing 2 or 3 times a week, or more. --- Guy |
