Hello friends,
I have had my eye for some time on the Johnson "Hopping Half" Set of coins, which as advertized includes a "Sun and Moon" set and expanded sh*lls. I recently saw a local magician (who table hops at his wife's pizza place) perform the standard "Hopping Half" routine beautifully. So now I am convinced and have ordered the set for myself. So now I am interested in any "Hopping Half" effects, stories, or advice that I can get. What are your favorite effects? What sources are there for routines using these coins? Thanks in advance for any help. alan

Learn to keep the coins quiet. Use a pocket handkerchief to keep the shells apart in your pocket and keep them from making shell noise. Use Bobo's non sleight with a C/S coin slightly before the hopping halfs. Do the pass out and get rid of all the curiosity the coins may have first. Once they have handled the two genuine coins they will not question the hopping halfs. I usualy do the crazy mans handcuffs or some other type of effect in between. Then when I pull out the hopping halfs, I always say "hey you remember our old friends the copper and silver coins, I forgot to show you something else with them thats completly different" This small amount of psycological conditioning assures the spec that they are the same coins that were in their hands a little while ago and they are about to witness something amazing and new. You end clean and this is good because after the casual examination before,if you had coins in your hands they would have the magnifying glass out. If you fold the handkerchief in quarters and place each peice in a seperate fold you will be able to reset very fast while its still in your pocket. (But don't do it twice. It would be like kicking a man when he is already down)
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

Cafe members who get the Linking Ring magazine and are interested in Hopping Halves may want to keep an eye out for my Showtime column; sometime in the near future (and I'm sorry but I can't say when), it will include my No-Gimmick Hopping Halves.

This is probably my favorite effect. I keep it in my wallet because it's powerful, yet so simple. I normally wear clothes with mulitple pockets, and put each coin in a different pocket so the coins don't talk. If you're looking for a good way to present this effect to a spec, you can email me. My mentor showed me a really nice set of patter that goes perfectly with the trick. I get people in school to come up to me who want to see the "2 Coin Trick" as I call it.
For different effect with it, i sometimes do the coin through bill routine, where you palce a coin on the bill, squeeze it, then work it through to the other side. Email me if you want an explanation. Really put some time into this, because I've had more fun doing this trick than most, and my audience agrees. -Haas |
