This sounds very similar to Kentons wonder words series. Anyone got any comparisons? or reviews?

Sorry, I promised a review of this a couple of weeks ago, but time is a bit short at present. It isn't as in-depth as I would have liked, but...
'Sleight of Mind' (Spellbound Publishing) - £29.99 %$#@&*^* Free... As a psychology freak with, I would hope, my feet planted firmly on the ground, I'm slowly having had enough of hearing about NLP and Hypnosis and what they can do. NLP in particular has become the flavour of the month to such a degree that it's hard to have an intelligent conversation about it with another mentalist without being told that it's unquestionably the most powerful tool, ever. Try being a little critical of said mentalist's opinion and you're in for a whole heap of grief. If ever mentalism had a case of, 'The Emperor's New Clothes', NLP is it. That’s purely my personal opinion of course, but personal opinions have a habit of clouding good judegement, as you'll see. You can now imagine my dismay when I received a new book called 'Sleight of Mind' a few weeks ago, calling NLP and Hypnosis a 'Mentalist's Toolkit' no less. Unimpressed, my review of this 170 page, well-presented tome was to begin with the word, '%$#@^*&%' - when in fact I have to admit somewhat sheepishly that it should really begin, as I have here with, '%$#@^&*% free' instead. It's a long time since I read a book about NLP or Hypnosis and felt I wasn't being spoon-fed hype about it by those who are desperate to try to have us believe that they use far more clever tactics than we lowlier beings. But this IS different. Sleight of Mind is a clear, entertaining (even funny) and refreshingly truthful look at those parts of both Hypnosis and NLP that really do work, on and off stage. No over-blown claims, no pseudo-psychology. Sleight of Mind says, "This is how it works, this is what to do," without a trace of self-importance. And it feels good. Taking suggestion as the main theme, the book guides the reader through a variety of persuasion techniques, with real world examples and routines that anyone can learn to use. The presentation and wealth of truly usable information within this book make it great value for money. Save yourself a fortune in other books, get this title and work outwards from there. I’ve already used two of the routines from it with good success (oh okay - the second time I tried them I had good success!:)) and now feel confident enough to explore everything Sleight of Mind covers a bit more deeply. All in all, highly recommended. I have to wonder why nobody has written anything like this before? Loved it. Carl |

To those in the "KNOW",
How does this work compare with Luke Jermay's Coral Fang? My wallet is crying out for mercy. Peace

Thankyou for the review Carl. Any other reviews? This book does sound promising. How many routines are there and are they all workable in the real world? Is this manuscript available anywhere else? Cheers

Unfortunately I don't have many details other than what I've been sent. The book releases about now and is 'available through all good stockists'. It's certainly worth going to the Spellbound site to ask, I know they ship directly from there to anywhere in the world.
I haven't read 'Coral Fang', but as far as I can tell it's very similar to Seven Deceptions. Where Jermay's titles are books of routines, 'Sleight of Mind' is a 'how to' which uses routines (some very original) to illustrate the methodology described. It brings a lot of ideas together and makes it then a very logical process to go on and create your own effects from what is shown. As for whether what's in there can be used in the real world I would say unreservedly, yes. It also really made me consider how people think of me; and who I WANT to be seen as by them, both in my performances and in real life. Other reviews are on the way. I did a belated one for Osterlind's 'Mental Miracles' (posted in the Good Bad and Garbage section), and I have another 3 items that I want to talk about, hopefully soon! Carl Sorry, I don't think I explained that very well, above. In short, don't buy Sleight' if you're looking for just a 'trick' book. But if you want something that explains NLP and Hypnosis in a useable Mentalist context (PLUS routines), you'll love it. Carl |

Glad to be of service:) I'm getting 'Illuminati' soon, I believe it's very good. Simple and logical, but a *** clever effect. I 'borrowed' this description...
Your Participant selects one of three authentic hotel room key cards and secretly writes an imaginary room number on the back.He holds that card number-side-down and slides it between the remaining two key cards. The three stacked cards are slowly and openly shown top and bottom, front and back. There is no doubt that all three hotel key cards are completely opaque and that the room number is totally hidden from view. Yet you can reveal the secret information almost instantly! No Sleights No Electronics No impressions or copies Nothing added or taken away Instant Reset No Mess Includes both printed and VCD video instructions Don't you just love trying to figure out how it's done before you get the trick?:) Carl |

Received the book yesterday.
It´s a really nice looking and professionally printed book. I´ve only read the first 50 pages so far and must concur with CarlD. It´s an entertaining read and is pleasantly unpretentious. To me it´s clear the authors know what they are writing about. I´ll do a full review when I am through. Finished the book during Christmas. This is a very hard book to talk about in a concise way. Having read reviews of Sleight of Mind and gotten comments from a couple of others I know who have also read the book, I've come to the conclusion that we're all thinking of what it offers very differently. For CarlD for instance, it was all about suggestion, Hypnosis and NLP. For me it was all those things but just as much about the human psyche and the way we create the person who we're believed to be in the eyes of others; and how easy it is to consciously or subconsciously make ourselves dislikeable/desirable. I already knew some of the basics offered here, and yet it wasn't until I read this book that I realised that I haven't been applying what I know to its fullest. It's somehow as though we as mentalists have all learned this clever stuff, but we tend to think about it just in terms of routines and effects, rather than stepping back and seeing how we can use it in the rest of our lives too. Even as I'm writing this I realise that I'm not doing a very good job of describing what Sleight of Mind is all about, just because it IS about so many different things. Yes, as a book on mentalism, NLP etc, etc it's something I'm very glad to have read. Good routines, a lot of eye-opening information (and a surprising lack of the typo's that are so common in magic books) and overall just a very interesting and useful read. If I had to give it a mark it would be an 8.5 out of 10, I suppose a bit unfairly as my only criticism is that I wanted to know more about certain subjects that were only briefly touched on, but which I imagine had been omitted as being a bit off-topic. I'd certainly recommend it and can see it being one of those must haves for any intermediate mentalist. For me it was thought provoking and well worth having on my shelf just for the ideas it gave me. Although some of this is pretty advanced stuff, I think that if you're willing to put in the effort it's the kind of thing that anybody could do and look all the smarter for it. |
