Where would one find performances of the great mentalists on video?

I would simply love to view them in action, to see every nuance, every detail. I would even love a “non-edited” performance, so that I may see the interludes between effects, because as we all know, sometimes these can add to an act greatly.

…On a side note, I leave in the southeast, so if anyone can recommend where I can go to see a mentalist live, I would appreciate it.

Cheers,

Rick.

Judging from most of the posts on this site you guys in the UK have many shows that feature mentalism. Derren Brown, Marc Paul etc, it would also seem as though you guys also have far more performers working the circuit as well as new guys coming out Jermay & Spellman..

I should be asking you for tapes, in fact I would if it wasn't for the NTSC problem..

For performance I reccommend Andy Nyman who seems to be underated here, I didn't really go for the effects he performed on Get Nyman but he has a great style.. Cassidy is also worth watching as it shows a completely different style.. Both good in the right situation.

If you can get a copy of David Berglas' UK TV series that is excellent mentalism in my opinion.

If The Amazing Kreskin -- admittedly the one who sparked my interest in mentalism over 30 years ago with his Canada-based tv series -- ever grants release of this series on DVD millions of people around the world (many of whom weren't even born when the series first aired) will, for the first time, see for themselves the true meaning of "mentalist."
If I could I'd also buy up every available recording of Kreskin's decades of exciting television appearances, which no doubt run into the hundreds if not thousands by now.
Watching Kreskin would be tantamount to attending a graduate school of mentalism.
I can only hope that, before he retires, The Amazing Kreskin does release a career-spanning boxed-DVD set of his performances. If so, I pre-ordered YESTERDAY!

It's not going to happen.

Channning Pollack was filmed in European Nights
in 1959 and he was copied around the world, creating a dove craze that is with us to this day.

It is not worth a professionals time to be analysed by amateurs. Why would most performers hand you their bread and butter on a plate?

Some pro's don't have a problem with this, but most do.

In the good old days it was called "The Real Work" and was subject to much wailing and gnashing of teeth to get even titbits from working pro's.
Ask Jon Racherbaumer.

Assume that:
You have to read everything, do homework on the net, search everything.

No-one will hand you an act that can be copied unless they are so sure their personality dominates and/or it has been heavily edited.

Everything is in books.
Read everything.

Cheers.

I am very fortunate in that I have on Video; David Berglas entire TV series, Chan canasta Tv series, Kreskin , Romark (remember him !), Maurice Fogel, Marc salem at Studio 54, and quite a few others. Yes they are ideal to learn from as long as you remember that these performers had their own styles don't copy them develop your own.

Why do you want to watch? You can learn way more from books.

You cant learn presentation, stagecraft, microphone technique, audience management, etc., from books. I find video easier.

I think you could possibly learn all of these things throug books and practice, sorry I don't wish to disagree on purpose, but maybe it is possible. I Have a friend who never wants to watch DVDs or the likes as he does not want his performances to be influenced by others'.

Just a few thoughts,

K

One thing people need to remember is that people learn differently. Some learn by hearing, some by seeing, others by doing (kinistetic). I'm one who learns by seeing. The problem that is inherent with that is the tendency towards imitation. The only way that can be overcome is by simply working on it and being mature about what you're doing.

Although you mentioned video, you might want to keep in mind that there are a few good performance audio tapes/cd's on the market. Dunninger's radio show is just one example.
