Easy. Just say "I better make sure you didn't pay me too much" Then count it.
I am renowned for my tact and diplomacy. |

Billy Whizz and Emazdad both say that they never send a "thank you" letter following a show.
They seem to feel that doing the show is enough. Sigh! For me, the world has far, far too many small people with pinched souls in it, I guess. |

Wow! Clive AND Cheshire are thinking like me ... and Peter isn't! I think I'm in Bizzaro World!
But, can't we say "Thank You" and STILL see that we are being paid? I simply don't understand the "social blunder" aspect of checking our money. And I do send thank you follow-ups. BTW, I just returned home from doing a $1,500 gig. And guess what? The check is in an envelope, still unopened! Guess that makes me a hypocrite! |

I always get paid before the show begins so I have never had to deal with getting shorted.
I did get a check that bounced once.

Peter, I take the time to thank not only the birthday child, but the booker before I leave. I don't finish pack up and run.
I put my stuff in the car and then with go over to the most important person, the birthday kid shake their hand, and tell them what a wonderful time 've had and thank them very much for inviting me. I then thank the booker, (it's funny really because we're both thanking each other) shake their hand and say thank you very much, if your impressed with what I've done, please telll your friends and go. (I even lie and do it at parties that have been a nightmare) In the UK we get a bit suspitious of over sincerity, we tend to think peole are after something. so my sincere verbal thank you should be more than enough.
Yours Funfully

Your friend lowered his price to $100 and got $63. Why? Well, it was obviously all that the woman had left and she was too embarrassed to ask for another discount or to admit that fact. If you can't, or couldn't, see that, then there's no point in trying to explain the "social blunder" aspect of checking the money. Some people are just born insensitive, I guess. |

I know someone who was in a similar situation after reducing the price for an email except when he drove to the house it was an absoloute mansion and the woman was driving a porshe. When he told her about the email saying they couldn't afford his rates he was paid the full rrate. It had turned out the sun had invited him planning to use his own money. Luckily the situation was resolved.

Hmmm; that's HARDLY the same.
It's a bit like saying I'm the same as the Queen -- except that I'm on this side of the pond, she's older, I'm taller, she's a woman, I'm retired, and she's the Queen. But otherwise . . . |

I also agree with others here. I never ever open a letter, count the money or look at a check infront of the client. This is me telling them that I do not trust them and it hurts my relationship building with them.
I will always wait till I am at my vehicle to open and check the amount etc. If there is a problem then, then I can address it at that time the right way. Kyle

Ahh once I was handed the wrong envelope. If I did not open it I would have gone home with $15 and the Pizza boy with much more more...
The reason I think most ask for money in an envelope is so that the children do not see the exchange of money. Some parents have no problem whipping out a wad of cash in front of children, friends and family to pay you. The one draw back of a sealed envelope is that it can cut your tip rate. That is, many times the envelope system is very easy for all. First it allows the performer to get out the door faster since the money is ready to go. And for the client they do not have to fish for money or a checkbook while trying to light the candles on the cake. But if they do prepare and seal that envelope you have not given them permission to give extra. Most people will GIVE if you make it easy for them. There can be an issue if you do NOT open the envelope in the house. There could be the other uneasy feeling. The other feeling that they will think you took out a bill and claimed they shorted you. If you do not check in their presence, there might be a few that will think that you skimmed or that a bill fell out while you were checking. Now in general I find myself checking after I get in car and sometimes have found an error when I get home. Those are the moments I wonder if they will doubt me. Now I can hear some you saying "but how could anyone think the Great Gizmo would cheat his clients." But lets face it, one also assume people will not cheat you out of little Timmy's 6th birthday show. So yes the majority of people on both sides are honest and any difference is usually an honest error. I have only had a few bad checks in the last 15 years and while some were a pain to collect on, there were honest mistakes. Any cash mistakes have either been that a bill has been stuck or there is one bill missing. The pizza money mistake only happened once. So to answer your question, I use my experience. If they have not ALREADY asked me to check it, I tell them the humorous story of getting the pizza money. If I still need to check in private I will open it before I leave the house if possible I do not open the envelope all the way if sealed and count it. This way if there is an issue it looks less likely that I did anything. The idea is not to create any doubt, which will delay your travel to the next gig. It was great to read the other comments. Sometimes they do put in extra and to confirm what is inside can help you. That is, if they did tip and you did not know you might think they made a mistake. Then you have to go back in and clear it up. AND sometimes I knew they made a mistake DUE TO THE STUCK BILLS. I will not take a $40 tip if I felt they only meant $20. People around me work hard for their money and for certain shows, a $40 tip would be too high of a percent on the base to just assume so ethically I go back in and ask if that was the "little extra" they put in. We are so lucky people pay us what they do for an hour. Many people work 8 hours to take home what we can in a couple of hours. We should be grateful not greedy thus why checking is important. Sure it might hurt to return the extra but they will give you full marks for being honest. Oh and I just thought of another story. The husband once tipped me because he had such a good time and said not to tell the wife since she does not tip. But then she put extra in the envelope as well! Talk about an ethical pickle. Both wanted give and I wanted to take. Honestly, this was a while back and I am not sure what I did. I just remember the situation as being so funny since involved an envelope. I guess I am saying, in the end, if they whip out that wad of cash, there is no mistake what is going on so it is probably the best way regardless who sees. But if you have to go with an envelope, the stuck together story is good . |

That's lying, cheating, and stealing. If I don't have enough for dinner, should I still go out and just stiff the retaurant? No, I should not go out. I should eat at home. Obvious? Really?! How do you know that she simply wasn't intentionally cheating him? Guess what, low income people can be dishonest, too. There are lots of ways to provide a great birthday party experience without hiring outside entertainment. My parents NEVER had a magician or clown for me, and I did alright. And you still haven't explained what is improper about checking your money. What's improper about it? And, please, don't come back with something like "If you don't get it, you never will." In your generation's terminology, that's a cop-out. This is a forum of ideas and opinions -- please explain yours. I won't agree, but I'll respect it! |

Now strangely enough today (Saturday) I was handed a cash envelope from a very nice person. I immediately smiled to myself as this posting leapt into my mind; and yes, it was unopened for two hours!!
The lady gave it me before I started! |

You could take your cash register with you. Then just count it as you place it in the drawer. That’s the way most places do it. LOL
If you have to open it, I don’t think you really need a line to say other than thank you. Anything you say will sound like an EXCUSE to see if it’s the right amount. Just open it, take a quick count and say thank you. Maybe, just maybe the line, “Is this the correct change?” would work. Would I open it? NO. They trusted me not stealing the silverware, I trust them not short changing me. If they gave me a check I wouldn’t know for a few days if it was good or not. I can wait a few minutes to see if the cash is right. You’re a magician. You can make things vanish. You can pick peoples pockets. You can do all sorts of things. Should they search you before you leave? Tom

I was once over-paid. They forgot to take the payment for the band out of the envelope. It was a busy day and I said thank you, shoved envelope in my pocket and left.
The woman got in touch with me before I had even opened the envelope which made me wish I'd opened it and checked it earlier so I could've phoned her first. I thought it made me look a bit like I was chancing my arm... Anyhow, after that I check the money before I leave the house and tell them the above story. George |

Hey all, ask for payment before the show, explain that you know they will be busy after doing cake etc. so ask for it before the show(I personally do not open the envelope till I get home, but for you guys that feel the need) like I said ask for it before the show, most of the time I am setting up alone so there would be plenty of time to open and check the money or even going back out to your vehicle to get something provides plenty of opportuntiy, I remember one mom handing me an envelope and I just put it into my pocket and she said"wow your pretty trusting" I just looked at her and jokingly said "I know were ya live " teehee
