How beautifully this describes the challenges we face as magicians today -
"The public today is accustomed to the best in entertainment. It has little patience with any performer who is just average. Mediocrity is out-moded. If magic is to hold its place in the limelight of public interest it must keep pace with other forms of entertainment. It must be expertly done and presented in the modern manner. It must be smart and to the point. This applies to all who perform publicly, either for small intimate groups or for large audiences. There is, of course, a vast difference between doing stage magic and performing for a small group at a club or a social function. However, the same general rules hold true. Skill, presentation and showman-ship are of utmost importance. It is not within the scope of this book to expound the principles of presentation and showmanship. Suffice it to say, that this is an art in itself and is best learned through experience. The requirements for success in magic, however, are the same as in any other profession. First, master the tricks of the trade and learn to do them as skillfully as possible. Success will then depend upon your ability to make people like you. If people like you, they will like your magic. If you are an artist at what you do, they will sing your praises and applaud your artistry." This was written by Paul LePaul in 1949! The more things change..... sam |

Great little book by the way. If you've ever wanted to cheat but lacked the larceny, go buy this book. At a mere 10 or so bucks, it will feel like you're stealing.
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.
