I also found some titanium scissors from my local grocery store that cut rope really well! They are made by a company called Acme and they are only ten dollars!

I don't do a lot of rope work but I've found the colorful, diamond-braided poly (yeah, I know it ain't cotton) 3/8" rope sold in the boating supply in sporting goods works pretty darn good for me with the core removed. The kids like the colors and it's only about $2 for 25 feet. Maybe I'm just cheap, but it works for the few rope effects I do.

My suggestion is to go to PenguinMagic as they have a 18 feet Deluxe Magician Rope for $13.95. It's one of the best rope investment I've ever made. They are perfect superwhite sofe cotton rope that I use for Richard Sander's Fiber Optics effect. Before I bought this from Penguin, I bought some from HomeDepot; I wasted my money there unfortunately. Here is the link - http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=454

Sash Cord is the answer I comes with a core but it is very easy to remove. I can buy it from my local hardware store in Delaware. If your store does'nt carry it try to convince them to get it in. Good luck Magic Tad

Daryl has a good knit type rope on his site that he uses in his act and I've found to be excellent rope. http://www.foolerdoolers.com click on magician's supplies.

Some of the displays I feel are much better looking, and the rope is easier to negotiate when it's just a bit stiffer. My rope routine uses the professor's nightmare set except 2 of the long pieces and 1 short piece. No middle size at all. I just bought an extra bag o' rope from camirand for safe keeping. And for the best rope routine to study on earth, take s2000magician's advice, and get Steve Bedwell's "In Over Your Head" routine. Finominal.

I like Mr. Sanders' advice. I will use whichever rope gives the most to the effect. But I think that at the end of the day, what you do with the rope is more important than the type you use.

I took Bob Sander's expert advise and went to my local Big Lot store, they had some very soft cotton clothes line there it was 100' long, and 7/32" wide for $3 a fantastick bargain, and after that wise crack I gave you last night I'm glad to have the opportunity to help you. Al

I love Camirand Rope but I never cut it. For my cut rope tricks, I used to buy rope from MagicSmitch. It was the best I had ever seen. I think it was called "cheap white rope" or something to that effect. It was much thinner than Camirand rope but you could core it and it was brilliant white and super soft when cored. It wasn't yellow like the cheap magicians rope you can buy in spools from magic shops. It was like $9 for a 50 foot hank.
I can't find it any more. Does anyone know what it was called or where to find it? |

Sash cord is a lot like magicians rope. It has the proper filler.

I would think sash cord would look like string from the stage!
I got some rope from a local hardware store, it's "allright," but too thin. I've seen nylon rope at Wal-Mart, I'd be concerned that it would be too stiff or would slip.

If you're doing a knot routine (and if not you should consider doing one) like the excellent Dennis Loomis Knot Routine, I found the 1/2" braided nylon at Ace Hardware to work very well and the knots can be seen from a stage. It's sold by the foot ($1.09 per foot at my local Ace)and a brilliant white. For regular rope you can't beat the brilliant white rope sold by Elmwood Magic at $11.95 per 50 feet. This is great rope and yes, I've tried them all from Elite to Daryl's rope. Daryl's is great rope but looks a bit yellow up against the rope from Elmwood. Check it out at elmwoodmagic.com/

Thanks for plugging my Knot Routine, magicgrandpa. I've done a lot of rope magic over the years and there is no one "good" rope for everything. The rope I use for my Knot routine on stage is rather bulky to carry around for close up work. It's actually drapery cord from a drapery shop or good fabric store.
There are so many brands and kinds of magician's rope, that just the fact that it's "magician's rope" does not mean it's useful for all rope magic effects. You have to experiment a lot. But, as mentioned earlier, the Howie Didits thread is fantastic for getting lots of help from magicians. I urge you all to check it out. Dennis Loomis

Dennis, your knot routine is well worth plugging. For those not familiar with it the DVD is over 2 hours of solid material (The Dennis Loomis Knot Routine...Plus!)and it is wonderfully explained. What's more it is great fun to practice and if you keep the rope(s) handy you won't be able to walk past them without going through the routine.
I haven't had luck locally finding 1/2" or 5/8" drapery cord, so I settled on the Ace Hardware rope I mentioned. I can't think of a better M.C. routine or "filler" as the routine is naturally segmented so you can pick and choose and do anywhere from a minute to ten minutes or more. I'll never do a show without having this routine handy when I need it. Thanks Dennis! P.S. If you can give me a source for 5/8" white drapery cord I'd be forever grateful!

Enough time has gone by; I guess I'll chime in on this again. I've found sash cord to be too stiff even with the core removed. I'm not talking the skinny stuff but the type that most resembles standard magician rope. Clothesline is closer but difficult to find in anything other than plastic or nylon these days.
If you really want the real deal go to the library and go to the reference section. Look through the Thomas Register under ropes and cord. You will eventually find a manufacturer of the very favorite stuff we buy from our very favorite magic dealers. Yes it is all manufactured by big factories who know nothing about us magicians. They have no idea their product they churn out by the mile can make the average magician drool with enthusiasm. I hope I haven't burst the bubble for those who thought magic accesories were made by tiny elves in a hollow tree. (pass the cookies). I'm a little jealous about the Wal-Mart and big Lots stories. I'll have to look a little more carefully as I cut and restore a lot, I mean a lot of rope. Funny no matter how many times I restore it I still have to buy more. Frank Tougas

To magicgrandpa,
Your kind words on my routine are VERY much appreciated. In California, we have a chain of fabric stores called "Calico Corners." That's one place I have found the drapery cord in recent times. I might buy the minimum quantity from the manufacturer and make it available if there seems to be enough interest. I found a shop in San Francisco that had sizes all the way up to 1". To clarify: my "routine" as I usually do it only lasts 5 to six minutes, and I can shorten it when necessary. The DVD is over two hours because not only do I teach all of the stuff in my routine in great detail, but there's also a bonus section of a lot of other knots and rope flourishes taught by myself, and also Mary Mowder and Bill Spooner. The routine doesn't involve cutting the rope or drapery cord, and there is absolutely no set up. Just grab the length of cord and go to work. For a time, the routine was an emergency spare in my show. If a prop broke or some technical problem prevented going on with the normal show, I could do knots until I got the message from offstage that all was well to continue. Some of you may know that David Copperfield keeps a jumbo Invisible Deck at the side of the stage at all times as his emergency filler should problems arise. (Or used to, he may have something different now.) Having something like this gives you some peace of mind while performing. Denny Loomis
