I am about to take my first foray into the World of Digital Cameras up to now have been using my Contax SLR
and carting all the lenses and such about but thought I had better get up to date. I'm considering the Canon A95 Powershot as a good all-rounder after weeks of to and fro ing on various web sites for reviews. Anybody got first hand experience ? need replies quick I want one for Christmas. Howard |

Get the biggest CFCARD you can for the money. 32mb is nothing on a 5mp camera.
I have gone the digital slr route as I like to play with lenses, filters and other things only found with slr. Ask yourself what you will be shooting and the general use the camera will be used for and then look at the products that best suit your needs

Hi Partizan,
not too bothered about playing with lenses anymore, but do want to have control over exposure..aperture priority, shutter priority in addition to the "point and shoot" capability. this camera seems to have all I want..Including standard batteries..not keen on proprietry batteries (iPod users Note!), Swivel LCD screen seems useful as well, also size is not the criteria but I do find "diddy" cameras a bit finnicky to use, this one is not too small but comforable to use and can be gripped and operated with one hand. cheers Howard |

Although I have been using digital cameras for a few years, I still believe SLRs give you the best overall quality picture. I have a couple of Canon EOS SLRs and take them wherever I go on Vacation. I heard a lot of good things about the Canon Digital Rebel, but very expensive.
As far as I know all digitals have lousy battery life and flash is only good from a few feet. I like the ease and PC compatabliy of Kodak Digitals. Remember, the more megapixels the better. |

M.Perk,
Thanks for that , I've used imaging-resource and Steves digicams for my main reviews but that one certainly helped..I've ordered one anyway. Howard |

Test the lag of the camera!
You need a moving object (best is a spinning record) you need to note a point to press the shutter and then take a pic. Look at the lag between the point you took the pic and what the camera actually grabbed. Some digitals are very poor on this score, grabbing 1/2 second late.

Howard, I don't know anything in particular about the camera you're looking at, but I have to say you won't ever miss those extra lenses and heavy camera bags - I sure don't!
I still have my N70 slr, but haven't even finished the roll that's been in it for the last year. I picked up a Nikon Coolpix 5700 and have a 256 memcard in it at all time (bought 2). I love it. Hope your choice gives you the same satisfaction. Merry Christmas! -Rob. |

I'd hook it up with the Digital Rebel. All of my friends that are into photography (i.e. the friends I have that have their own media companies) use it.
For the price it's perfect. 6.3 Megapixels, comes with a lens kit and it's not hard to use, good for beginner or a more advanced/professional photographer. Do some checking online and look for the best deal, be CAREFUL buying from the New York/New Jersey area. Also be careful getting a 'great deal' off E-bay. Talking with Pete Biro a long while ago, he told me to check out the Nikon D70. I have been doing some more research on it, but for the price of it, it's not worth it to me. You have to go buy the lens kit for it which could run you up to about $1500 for the camera plus lens. Chris |

And a Merry Xmas to you Rob, yeah my Contax has a roll
still in it, that was three holidays ago. Now I just buy a disposable when on holiay if its only"snaps" I want. he canon A95 seems to come out on top in its particular sector and it has the features I mentioned earlier. Anyway the "Deed" is done I'm sure it wll be fine. Howard |

Pete Biro's the guy to ask. he does a lot of work for Genii, amongst other things. In fact, he used a digital camera to do the photograph of Jon Armstrong on the December cover.
It looks great. |

I've got a Canon EOS 20D and a new 2gig memcard(along with a 512,256,128 older ones - isn't the fact they are backward compatable nice?).
I love the thing soooooo much, check it out, it's by far the best digital camera I've owned(many) and the auto-features on it are actually really really good compared to others. I like being able to set my own settings for artistic shots and whatnot, but with the 20D, I've been able to almost always point and shoot and come out with a great shot(photoshop CS doens't hurt for postprocessing either). |

I have the Nikon D100 (similar to the D70) and have used a few of the other top digi-sLr and I would never go back to a non sLr or a non digital. It is truly the best of both worlds and better than both other options. When you get to use one you will see!
I also have 2 standard digital cams. 1 fuji finepix 1.3mp and a Aiptek 3mp as my point and click cams. These only get used when I don't want to take expensive gear out. The Aiptek has quite a big lag. It captures about 1/5 of a second late, so if you take a picture and move the camera away you get the picture a few frames late or blurred.

I differ on this subject DIGITAL IS THE DEVIL!!!!! have you seen anyone post a digital pic on the wall??? people look at film and film turns out better and ya I have my old Nikon and its lasted me for years I'm one of those nerds who likes the old nikons. so for the finale don't BUY A DIGITAL

Hahahaha...don't buy digital.
Not only is digital less expensive (don't have to keep buying rolls of film), you don't have to worry about film getting destroyed, or having to get pictures developed, etc. The advancements happening with digital photography are insane. With cameras being able to reach 8 megapixels and more it's just crazy. Digital will end up replacing film for not only photography, but also film (yes yes, DIGITAL 35 MM movies!!!) Chris |

The Kodak pro14 is 14 megapix slr (I think it is the highest at the moment), All of the pictures you see in newspapers and magazines these days are taken with digital slr cameras.
I can take my CFcard down to the local photo shop and print from my card to photopaper. If I showed you 2 of my pictures on paper you would never know which one was digital and which was film. apart from the greater color depth of the digital. My local photo shop is cool. they let my treat my own prints (cropping, color balance, brightness/contrast)then print them out myself. This is on a €60,000 Konica print station, what a privilege! I have just finished working for a film company (movies) and they are looking to be fully digital within 5 years. that is digital cameras - digital post - digital projection. On a recent visit to greece I shot 326 photos. Think of the cost of dev and print on 300+ photos! many that I don't really want hard copies of. (just for extra envy I have 4 x 1GB CFcards)

Partizan,
Going digital with movies? What equipment were they planning on using? The only Digital 35MM for movies and film production is really on the downlow, a lot of the big studios aren't even aware of it (at the very least aren't picking up on it). My friend is working in Orlando right now on a bunch of music videos, and a couple full length movies that are in pre-production right now....it should all be done in digital 35MM...the stuff looks seriously amazing. Send me a PM if you want and I'll see if I can find one of the short films he did in it. It's crazy...the exact quality of using an actual Arri 35MM but digital, and without the cost of a $200,000 camera and a roll of film that costs almost $600. Chris |

I hope you guys aren't getting carried away by the Mpixel hype ?
unless you are wanting to blow up and crop large images. Then for normal postcard size and even 8x10 3.2Mpixels is more than adequate, my son has a Minolta dimage x31 and the pictures are excellent and it is a super metal bodied small camera, fits easily into a shirt pocket and can be carried around at all times. Unfortunately it has no optical viewfinder so batteries get eaten up quickly and there are no manual controls. cheers Howard |

More Mpix = greater detail, more depth of field, better color match. If I shoot a 6Mp piccy I can resample it to 8x10 resulting in far more detail retained in the smaller file then would have been captured with a 3.2 Mp camera. Also the larger file gives a great deal of lattitude for cropping and manipulation. Chris Berry Most of the post production is digital now anyway. The only thing holding it up is the cameras and they are just starting to be picked up by cameramen in the know. The company I worked for had just installed a Barco 2k projector with DaVinci grading in a custom theater. They are already gearing up for the digital movie boom.
