The pass can be very useful after you get it working smoothly. There are many challenging sleights in card magic. Have a look in the older books (pre 1980) or a recent book By Forces Unseen for examples in print. Denis Behr, a poster here at the Café, has a site with clips of him doing some of the challenging sleights and routines. Have a look when you get a chance.

"pass is a real hard(and useless)sleight"
There are many passes, some are hard but not all. If you can not do a pass it is obviously useless to you, but if you can, it can be very useful to the magician. Maybe, more useful than what are sometimes regarded as cooler sleights like false dealing etc.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

In Erdnase the pass was also a shift to shift the cut after the cut had been made. If the deck was stacked for a deal than the ability to shift the cut would be useful to a card cheat.
The pass as it is called in magic can bring a card to the top or the bottom of the deck. That in magic is useful. It can also be used for a color change in changing cards or done as a half pass to revirse the bottom part of the deck or several cards or even one card. That in magic is useful... And there are many more useful things depending on the pass that the magician chooses and the effect the magician wants to use if for. Check out Erdnase and all of the classic books on the pass and you will find more useful things... I hope this helps...

I gota tell you man, it took me close to two years to get my pass to where I was happy with it and I still work on it. Any sleight in magic should be continually practiced for your whole magical life. In the terms of cognitive psychology it takes something like ten-thousand hours (over the course of like ten years) of diligent, and critical practice to achieve world class ability in anything, and magic is no exception. Sure some sleights come easier, but that doesn't mean the harder ones should be over looked, instead you should continue to work at it, just make sure you find what works for you as well. Don't get discouraged, just get cracking! My two cents, not that they mean anything.

There are plenty of variations, methods and subtleties to help conceal it. Click here for starters. And please don't judge a sleight on its difficulty or "coolness." Judge it by its ability to get the job done. Yes, some are difficult. But nothing worthwhile is easy. As for how long you should practice a sleight: Q. How long is a piece of string? A. As long as it needs to be. In other words, practice a sleight until you have it burned into your muscle memory. Just make sure you are practicing it correctly.

Why do you look for harder sleights than Pass when Pass is a hard sleight and useless for you?
I think this tendency of liking difficult sleights hinders advancement of a magician. Sleights are only a part of producing magical effects. There are many things to learn to advance our magic. Sometimes, omitting difficult sleights in a routine makes the magic better. BTW, why many magicians like difficult sleights? I guess mastering and using them successfully gives magicians a big satisfaction. I sincerely believe a satisfaction should be given to our audience. Hideo Kato |

Hideo, I agree w/you. I believe magicians that enjoy mastering hard slieghts does give them(myself included) satisfaction. For me mastering hard slieghts is a kind of right of passage. I also enjoy the challenge of being able to master hard slieghts. I am working on the pass right now and it is coming along pretty well. I enjoy seeing the progress that I have made since I started with this hobby. It truly is satisfying to me when I see the response I get when I do some card effects for relatives and friends.
Magic is a vanishing art.
