I don't really know what to say here. I have been doing self working child tricks since I was 7 and had my first show at 8 at a daycare. But as for actually doing sleights I have been doing it for about 8 months now. So do I just count the 8 months or do I count the whole time. I am 22 now. Hmm...

I hope no one feels I meant that there is anything wrong with being new to magic or for just doing magic as a hobby. I don't feel there is anything wrong with either.
It just struck me as odd that some want others to believe they are more advanced then they are. It's not really a matter of time. It's about understanding where they are and not trying to make themselves look better by saying they are more advanced or have been practicing longer then they have. Like I said, I'm more impressed with how hard they've worked on it then how long they have. When someone can do something very well in a short period of time. Then I know they worked hard at that and can only imagine how much better they can get. Even if it is just a hobby to them. I'm especially impressed when someone does something well and still wants to improve. Ron Jaxon |

Started playing with cards when I was 6 and always tried to cheatg when I was playing games with my mother. (She still reminds me of that)
Real magic just 4 years now, but not profesionally. Try to keep my friends amazed. Actually I met my wife for the first time when I was doing some magic for my friends in the bar. She keeps telling that showing off with cards did the trick ;-)

About six years ago I learned the Three Crad Monte, by watching some drunk guys doing in the streets and winning lots of money, then at that time I learned how to make a cigarette disappear and then reappear, I also new few card tricks and that is it, for about 5 years I never learned anything else, I just knew these few stuff and
showed them to friends and to GIRLS hahah Then last year I read about magic, and then bought Mark Wilson's book,Ammars Videos, a couple of gimmicks, decks of cards and took it seriously, then obviously The Café, I read a lot in here and listen to others and learn from them. I am on my way now to magic, not very fast but I am there .

The age I claim as my official start into magic is sixteen. However, I was learning tricks and reading about magic long before then. My mother actually taught me my first good magic tricks when I was in about the third grade. She was also my coach in all forms of show business. My dad apparently never approved. To date he has never seen me perform professionally in rodeo, music or magic. By age thirteen I had a personal manager in Atlanta and a performance contract with one of the largest entertainment companies in the world at that time. I worked as a stage and studio musician through college. I was sixteen before I ever performed magic for an audience. Until I finished college, magic could not compete with the money I was making in the music and record business. However, like most young men of that era I had military time to serve. That meant selling my music business. More than that it put me out of the music business for at least five years. It also meant that I turned my entertainment energy to magic. I will soon have forty-four years in the business just counting from age sixteen. But I started as a professional entertainer forty-seven years ago.
I think that is a good start! Now I have over thirty years as a stage magician. It has been my good fortune to have worked in almost every venue out there from nightclubs, to malls, to fairs, to theaters and to TV commercials. I like close up as a hobby but stage pays the bills. Trade shows are where I feel most valuable. That is because it fits best with my formal education and experience since I have also spent years as a university professor (marketing, management and finance) and business consultant and member of corporate boards of directors. At this stage the question is really when will I ever have to quit. I hope the answer is “Never”. I just got started! Bob Magic By Sander |

My first introduction to magic was in 1969.
A rather tragic story...I won't bum people out by relating it here, but suffice it to say, the bug "bit" then, and I'm still uder its spell! Doug |

I have always had an interest in magic, since I was young. I would go to the library and check out magic books. Fast forward many years, school, college, a wife, a few kids and now I find myself for the first time really doing magic. Although I never stopped being interested in magic I just recently started to get serious about magic. I was asked to do a show for my daughter's class and things took off from there. And to think that I almost said no, I just couldn't bring myself to say no to her. So now I find myself doing magic shows on the side. So to answer the question, how long have I been doing magic... Well, not long, but if I keep at it, the better I'll get!

I used to have every magic trick that Toys 'R Us sold back when I was about 8 (10 years ago), but they got consumed when my old house caught on fire due to a poorly-constructed fireplace. I got back into magic about 2.5 years ago when I saw Lance Burton perform on TV. I have only been doing shows for about 1.5 years now. The first year was just experimenting and having fun with it.

Like many others here, I got a Svengali when I was about 12 or 13 years old, but my interest in magic really piqued last year after seeing an amazing performance by a friend of the family. I've been doing a lot of reading and practicing over the last year, and I've really come to enjoy it.

How long have I been in magic? do you really want to know? are you sure?
Pretty much since the day I was born. Not really but it seemed like that, I was five years old, the year was 1996 (i was born in 1990) when my dad had a business meeting and my mom took me and my brother to a toystore at the mall in Louisville Kentucky, it was there that I bought my first magic kit. I'm 16 years old, been doing magic for maybe 12 years and this year I have been very forunate to call myself a illusionist.

Tell me, ibm_usa, why do you call yourself an Illusionist, instead of a Magician?

I have been very interested in magic since around 10 years old, and only knew a few easy tricks which my friends taught me a few easy tricks, like pen vanish (just a simple transfer), coin vanish .... But it is not until 2 years ago I found there are website (I found Penguin Magic that summer) that I can learn magic from. and not until a year ago that I learn the proper way to learn magic (get a good book and study it with slow pace)..yeah, so basically I am still a beginner learning the basic now.

I've been practicing and studying for about a year. I spend around 5 hours a day and treat it like school, reading, practicing technically, spending time with video and performing once-twice a week.
It will be interesting to see how my "skills" measure up to those who have been "into" magic for many years. I am interested in seeing if learning slieghts over a long period of time offers a greater level of perfection than lots of practice over a short period of time. However long you have been into magic, thankyou,we are a small group and together we pave the way for our craft to continue and set the stage creating future magicians in every performance we do. I have only been seriously practicing and studying for about 4 months now. I usually try to practice about 3 - 4 hours a day. I think I am getting a lot better fairly quickly now
I too would be interested to find out how practicing a lot over a shorter period of time differs from practicing a little of a very long period... |

I have been into magic since the summer of 2005, when I went to a museum in Portland, Oregon and learned the "21 Card Trick" and I've been into card magic ever since. Only as of late (Christmas 2006) have I started mentalism. For my birthday on Feburary 9th, I got Bobo's "Modern Coin Magic" and De'vo's "Extreme Beginnerz DVD" I am thinking of learning bizzare magic next. Regards,
